Title: Superb stuff
Review: Fans of Roky Erickson and the 13th Floor Elevators should probably acquire this CD, which I believe was Roky’s swan song before his untimely death. It finds Roky in fine form and the backing band does a tremendous job with the material. Recommended for sure.

Title: Redemption for a Legend
Review: The legend and legacy of Roky Erickson has been oft repeated and I assume that if you are reading this review you are a fan of Roky and The Thirteenth Floor Elevators. The acid casuality that was the undoing of Roky’s mainstream fame has lead to this moment in the tragic career of the ultimate 60″s survivor. True Love Cast Out All Evil is the sobering commemorization of the redemption of a legend. The word “legend ” is frequently used indiscriminately but rightfully applies to only a handful of artists whose vision, dedication and sacrifice have enhanced the world and life itself through their contributions. True Love Cast Out All Evil is Roky Erickson reborn and coherent. His catalog of music has for the most part been the manifestation of a mind and soul tortured by injustice, drugs, schizophrenia and neglect. If you haven’t seen the documentary,: You’re Gonna Miss Me; The Story of Roky Erickson, then you cannot understand the depth and signifigance of this CD. The long journey back from despair, squalor and isolation is the result of ” True Love “, embodied by Roky’s brother Sumner, whose compassion and selflessness rescued Roky from a living hell. The songs on this CD reveal the depths of Roky’s pain and suffering and shed light on the man inside the legend, desperately trying to escape that hell. The undiscerning, casual listener may dismiss these songs because they don’t “rock out” as those people might have expected. But that is the point of the songs. This is not the demon possessed, screaming victim, but the sober and lucid human being expressing his grattitude for the exorcism of those demons. On the road to recovery , Roky has painted the portrait of his life and it’s experiences, a true unveiling of his troubled past and the light that now shatters that darkness. A powerful and emotional collection of songs masterfully assembled by Will Sheff of Okkervil River,( should have won a Grammy ) they stand stark and inspiring with just the right touches of Elevator inspired weirdness to remind us of those bygone days when young hearts and minds were occupied with the pursuit of truth, peace and understanding.

Title: Rock ‘n’ roll redemption
Review: If ever there were a story of rock ‘n’ roll redemption, it belongs to Roky Erickson, one-time charismatic front man of the pioneering psychedelic-rock band the 13th Floor Elevators. It’s been a harrowing life, spiraling from late ’60s cult hero into serious mental illness and dreadful, even criminal, treatment at the hands of the state.Incredibly, Erickson, 63 this year, has made a triumphant comeback, with folk-rock band Okkervil River’s Wil Sheff producing, and, it seems, being a genuine buddy, which, in the shark-infested waters of the music/entertainment business, Roky certainly needs. Members of Okkervil made up the studio band, forging a perfectly sympathetic, ramshackle union with Erickson. There is sadness in these recordings, but no sense of bitterness. Sheff and Roky have created something beautiful and deeply personal here.

Title: My first Roky CD
Review: I heard of Roky a few years ago and found his story to be compelling. Yet I had still not purchased any 13th Fl or solo material. For whatever reason it turns out this is my first (won’t be the last) Roky CD. So, I have no preconceived notions or expectations as to what this should have sounded like, could have sounded like, or would have sounded like with some other band, etc. What I had going in was I knew his personal story. From that perspective I found the CD to be thoroughly enjoyable. I like the music, the production, and the overall sound and mood conveyed within. He takes the story of his life and puts it to music. There is sadness, joy, and redemption. The CD does well to convey the stories, the moods, the feelings.

Review: This is a brilliant come back album from a true musical icon who unfortunately doesn’t get his fair share of recognition. There are countless gems on here including the pounding it out minimalist song John Lawman, True Love Cast Out all Evil. Goodbye Sweet Dreams is a tearjerking anthem because he is longing about lost time and hopes he has lost due to ” the system “. Birds Crashed is a brilliant song about not giving up on love and one’s spirit. The production is interesting because they keep the tapes rolling between takes so you hear Roky’s comments.

Title: Long may you run Roky!
Review: What a beautiful soul searching and achingly honest album from Roky Erickson that puts him up with the great Austin formed Cosmic Cowboy singer/songwriters like Towns Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Lucinda Williams and Steve Earle. This is heart felt masterful music created by this sweet but misunderstood and troubled musician. Completely autobiographical and arranged by Will Sheff of Orkerville River, it’s a long way from Roky’s classic 60’s and 80’s material but it’s the perfect closer to his storied career. Long may you run Roky!

Title: Roky goes Sinatra
Review: The vocal stylings of Roky Erickson always was those of a great blues voice combined with a broadwaysque tinge frases ending in that trademark whine evoking the listerners childhood so while it points from here to there there also was a sense of SF in the expression. For the first time Roky is presented within a big more lavish production with almost bigband like arrangements.

Title: First time fan
Review: After watching the recent documentary, I decided to dive in head-first and check out what the man can create in real time. “Blown away” is the best term I can use. I didn’t know what to expect; but if this is what Roky is all about in his later years, I can’t wait to start exploring his past!
