Russian Tarot of St. Petersburg was painted by Yury Shakov, an artist renowned for his lacquer miniatures and flawless depictions of Russian folk and fairy tales. This stunning 78-card deck reflects not only his superb style and artistic expertise, but also his original interpretations of the tarot, presenting traditional tarot archetypes through the imagery of Russian history and culture. The miniature paintings in vivid colors are set on black fields framed within oval borders, reminiscent of Imperial Fabergé eggs. Born in Baku, Azerbajian in 1937, Yury Shakov studied art in Moscow and Palekh. His artworks are owned by many private collections and by the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.

Title: So glad to have this deck!
Review: Knowing how and why this deck was made, and that Mr Shakov tragically passed away before publication, I knew this was a very special deck indeed made by an extremely talented artist. I’m very happy to have this deck in my collection! One of the most beautiful decks out there.

Title: Beautiful artwork
Review: This is my second copy of the deck. The first was my very first tarot deck, puchased in 2005. I’m Russian-American & wanted something by a Russian artist.The artwork is superb. The black backdrop makes the paintings pop & makes intuitive reading easier, I find. I’ve had so many amazing experiences with it. I use it personally & with clients to this day.

Title: Stunningly Beautiful Cards
Review: If you appreciate Russian miniature art, and like to collect Tarot cards, you will like these. They are simply beautiful. The book that (here) is purchased separately describes how they came to be, and the symbolism he chose to use. I think they should be purchased together.For a beginner? I wouldn’t recommend this deck. They would be difficult to use, but if you are experienced, or simply like to collect unusual cards, these will make a wonderful addition to your collection, or a fine gift for someone interested and already knowledgeable about Tarot.

Title: Absolutely beautiful!
Review: I’ve used this deck for many years since its first printing. After about 300 readings, the gold edging begins to show considerable wear. This is to be expected from any deck, especially those with metallic inks. It gives my professional readings a sophisticated ambiance, while staying true to the Pamela Coleman-Smith illustrations and symbolism in the good old Rider/Waite styles. Exquisite, lovely, classy, and easy to read!

Review: I owned the Russian Tarot of St. Petersburg cards when they were first developed in the mid-1990s, and I regret losing them during a turbulent time in my life. Recently, I decided to revisit Tarot and sought out this deck in particular. Unfortunately, upon receiving the new deck, I was disappointed. The images in this rendition are not crisp and the print quality is poor, giving the cards a cheap feel. It’s a shame they don’t make them like they used to.3 stars because they are usable.
