Title: A brilliant portrait of a renowned luthier
Review: I first heard of John Monteleone in a story Mark Knopfler told at the Prince’s Trust concert in London in 2009, where he said meeting John was like meeting Stradivari. What would that be like I often wondered. Video from that story serves to open and close Singer Street Production’s remarkable documentary The Chisels Are Calling which gives us all the opportunity to experience that meeting and get to know John and hear from the musicians who consider him the world’s greatest luthier. My wife and I travelled from western Canada to Long Island to view a screening, meet John and the producer Trevor Laurence, and hear two of his guitars in an intimate theatre. The documentary was brilliant; the Q&A confirmed the John we saw in the film and Trevor’s inspired production; the live performances amplified what we had heard in the film.We have enjoyed viewing the streaming video several times, while we waited for the release of the DVD. It arrived late last week and we’ve watched it twice already! Plus the wealth of extras makes the DVD a must buy.

Title: A terrific documentary about a man driven to create some the world’s greatest guitars.
Review: Great guitars are functional works of art. They are beautiful to look at, wonderful to hear and for some lucky ones, an honor to play. This movie reveals something wonderful about the human spirit – and I for one appreciate the reminder.

Title: Fantastic Luthiery and Artwork–meh film
Review: John Monteleone is clearly a master luthier and has built some of the most beautiful guitars i’ve ever seen. Honestly, though, the filmmakers made it seem John really thinks he is and loves the smell of his own musk. I’m guessing he’s in reality a humble and nice guy. However, the feeling of pretentiousness the filmmakers created makes this viewing as comfortable as a colonoscopy.Recommend this for a coffee house.

Title: Wonderful!
Review: Nice, relaxing profile of wonderful luthery artist. Wish there was more of Monteleone actually discussing his techniques rather than musicians talking about it.
