Title: Frustratingly quirky design
Review: This device runs smoothly and the camera functionality is pretty neat, but it has a lot of quirks. It’s nice to have a 4K dashcam that also records the backup camera.I thought the unusually sharp 1600×600 display would be good. However, in CarPlay, it makes all the icons unusually small and difficult to press. The directions are unusually small, more difficult to read than other CarPlay devices.The screen does not have any sort of light level detection, despite being built with multiple cameras.The speed and extra functionality mean the screen takes an unusually large amount of power. This device does not use USB-PD. This device relies on a 5V3A power supply. There’s one included (that has a right-angle plug that blocks the backup camera port if angled the natural way down), but the included adapter has only one USB port for phone or other devices. It took me some trial and error to find a cigarette lighter USB power supply that could provide the 5V3A and also enough USB ports for all the devices I want to power in my car.The con of the backup camera recording is that it doesn’t work with normal backup cameras. The screen comes with a relatively large camera that’s always on. However, like other aftermarket cameras, it still requires a tap into the reversing light‘s power lead, to signal that it’s time to show the backup view on the screen. At least the camera is a standard width, so I could put it on a common license plate holder.The most annoying aspect so far about this device is the mounting. This display comes on a screwed-on mounting plate that works only with its own dash-mounted stand. It doesn’t work with any of my other stands. It doesn’t even use a ball mount; the included stand uses a bizarre half-dome mounting system. I don’t want to use the dash-mounted stand because the large screen blocks so much of my view of the road.
