Review: Masaaki Yuasa is honestly one of the most fascinating anime directors I’ve came across in recent years. His characters often tend to move in bizarre ways and the storytelling tends to be just as unconventional. His works can be strange, but also whimsical, and sometimes even both. It did take me a few years to settle into his style, but I can absolutely pinpoint the moment when my passing curiosity became a full on passion of mine. The timing of fully getting into his works couldn’t have been any better for me, since Shout! Studios and GKids recently issued this full Blu Ray boxset of all of his films plus some additional bonuses. I’ll state my thoughts on each film briefly:- Mind Game is certainly a memorable debut film, it doesn’t always look pretty but it certainly is fascinating from an animation perspective. The characters in this film certainly can’t be called heroes in the conventional sense, but it’s their resolve which makes them compelling to follow when they find themselves in bizarre situations such as being trapped inside a while. It sets the stage for what would come next in stunning fashion.- Night Is Short, Walk On Girl is Yuasa’s second released film (and also his second Tomihiko Morimi adaptation), it goes for a cleaner look and more focused four act story as the main character hopelessly follows around his crush for the most of the film. The story can occasionally be frantic as there’s a lot of plot threads which can trip over themselves on occasion, but this is an overall excellent second film from this director and also the first film to be released from iconic Japanese anime studio Science SARU.- Lu Over the Wall released a month after Night Is Short in Japan, but was developed first. I can’t help but feel that this is an overlooked hidden gem in Masaaki Yuasa’s portfolio (release proximity most likely is to blame), since it manages to cram in a lot of nuance into what could just have been a simple kid friendly flick about a mermaid otherwise. This is the film which really made me fall in love with this director’s style, it’s what I would describe bizarre but also very heartwarming. Also, I think Lu is very adorable in general! Easily my favourite of his film films, which I’m aware might surprise some folks.- Ride Your Wave is easily this director’s most conventional film which has similarities to the works of Makoto Shinkai, but I feel like this could have been another director’s career best. The pretty visuals and convincing chemistry between the main couple keep me interesting in the film’s proceedings, these aren’t exactly perfect characters but that’s what keeps them compelling. It might not be as psychedelic looking, but I think that makes it an ideal entry point for people looking to get into Masaaki Yuasa’s portfolio.- Inu-Oh is the combination between a rock opera and a 14th Century Japan period piece I doubt anyone expected, but this distinct combination of two different time periods leaves this one as my second favourite film from this director. It’s very mature and refined, and in many ways it’s just about as much about the current state of the music industry as it is about helping spirits to tell their stories. Probably the world’s best rock concert but in film form. These five films and the bonus disc contents (with two additional short films) are all rendered in crisp sharp 1080p, which I think is the definite way to watch these. However, keep in mind that these are Region A discs so anyone outside areas where these are sold will have to either buy a a region free Blu Ray player or buy a region free external drive, download VLC media player, and download additional files to allow the program to work with the discs (after changing the regional code settings in VLC itself). Integration with MakeMKV and VLC is also important (this can be set up via the “Integration” section in the former program’s preferences window). Otherwise, it’s a very fine collection. The additional booklet and poster are both very nice bonuses, with the former being a retrospect of Masaaki Yuasa’s filmography and the latter having nice artwork which will look great on my wall.In conclusion, I highly recommend buying this boxset if you’re a fan of this director’s works like me, or if you’re looking for a quick way to get into his films without wanting to buy them individually.
