Title: Truly cannot escape the greatness of this album
Review: When I saw this movie in theaters December 2013 I loved everything about it. I worked at a movie theater though and would often walk in on my break to watch this. Surely enough these songs became so entangled in my mind that I had to hear them again and again (especially “Fare Thee Well”!) Oscar Isaac has a lovely voice and you wouldn’t even know that he wasn’t actually a singer or musician. I’m not a fan of Justin Timberlake at all, yet the track that he sings on is by far one of the most beautiful songs not only on the album, but, dare I say just.. ever? The soundtrack can, and does, stand alone from the movie, but of course also serves as a necessary companion to any music based film. It not only stands as a testament of the touching and personal nature of early American folk music, but also to T. Bone Burnett’s talent in working on some of the greatest films of our modern era.For a little extra dose of simulated nostalgia, buy it on vinyl if you can! Though, much to my chagrin, you do not receive a digital download when buying the vinyl, as you sometimes do. I just simply want this album in every format on every music device!

Title: The best movie sound track I have ever heard!
Review: The music, like the movie is brilliantly composed. I love hearing Oscar Issac play guitar and sing! He is very talented and shows true emotion to each song. Of course I must say one of my favorite songs is “Please Mr. Kennedy” a catchy tune featuring Justin Timberlake, and Adam Driver! It is a hit for not just me, but my 8 and 10 year old too! It is cool to say, here’s Poe and Kylo Ren singing together before Star Wars! Of course it is Oscar and Adam, but it is such a fun song. “Fare thee well” (both versions), “Hang Me, Oh Hang Me”, “Green, Green Rocky Road “ The Shoal Herring”, “The Death of Queen Jane” are my personal favorites along with “Please Mr. Kennedy. I hope this review is helpful. Five stars for sure!

Title: A Masterpiece and a Must Have
Review: When I read the negative comments for this soundtrack, I am shocked at the thought of “not as good as expected”….T-Bone did exactly what was expected in the soundtrack. This movie and soundtrack are not about expectations. They are about a genre….a period of time when musicians lived and performed exactly as Llewyn Davis did….with ABSOLUTELY NO EXPECTATIONS AT ALL…the musical content of this CD is top shelf. While I respect the opinion of those who would so readily dismiss the soundtrack as well as the movie, I must express my disappointment at their lack of depth and ability to understand a period of time which defies understanding and remains, to this day, a shining example of the courage to explore and create without fear and without expecting anything for the effort,. The fact that this period of time gave birth to one of our greatest musical troubadours speaks for itself and serves to validate the fullness of life in all of its splendor

Title: An Interesting Companion to the Coen Brothers’ Film
Review: “Inside Llewyn Davis,” the latest film by Joel and Ethan Coen, is in part a look at the folk revival in Greenwich Village during the early ‘sixties. It’s based loosely on the life of singer Dave Van Ronk and his memoir, “The Mayor of MacDougal Street.” I found the film to be an interesting exploration of whether an artist who is not really commercial can survive in America. Llewyn Davis, played by Oscar Campbell, is not always a sympathetic protagonist, but there are signs throughout the film of his integrity and, beneath the frustrated anger, underlying decency. The film is a strong statement about a certain raw bleakness in American musical life and also in parts of the landscape. There is excellent acting by Campbell, Justin Timberlake, John Goodman and F. Murray Abraham among others. At the same time, as a fan of the Coen Brothers’ and T Bone Burnett’s soundtrack for “O Brother, Where Art Thou,” I was a bit disappointed by this album. The Coens and Burnet decided to use the actors as singers as opposed to dubbing. Visually and dramatically, this may have been a good decision. But the soundtrack album doesn’t have the impact of the original recordings by Van Ronk and other singers from the ‘sixties. There’s a certain easy slickness that, at least for me, was something of a let-down.I’ll value this CD as a reminder of the film, but go back to the original recordings for the music.

Title: Accurate picture of a moment in time.
Review: The early 60’s folk music scene in NY started with the music of Dave Von Ronk and moved into the protest music of Dylan, et al. This evocative scene of a period when music, protest, the change in the scenery in first NY and spreading throughout the country is clearly of great personal interest to those who are now in their 60’s, who led the protests, who fought against the Vietnam War, and for equality of rights and diversity. For those of us who are younger it may seem a bit dated and difficult to comprehend, much less appreciate. The music has nonetheless held its power, hits with an impact, and helps people of all ages and backgrounds understand the most volatile of all decades in the past century, the leaders of its revolution in music and our American life. Worth watching and worth more in the listening.

Title: Renewed my interest in folk music
Review: I’m old enough that I can remember hearing songs from the 60’s folk era on the radio and watching folk acts on TV. But it has been a long time since I actively listened to 60’s folk. When I saw the trailers for the movie at the local theater I knew I wanted to see the movie but I surprised myself by buying the soundtrack too.”Fare Thee Well” made it to my main iTunes playlist. “Five Hundred Miles” was a long forgotten favorite and I’ve subsequently purchased some of the classic versions. Same with “Green, Green Rocky Road”. Some great songs on this album. And a special note for the purposely awful “Please Mr. Kennedy”. My son and I couldn’t stop laughing during this scene in the movie. Props to Justin Timberlake for being willing to make fun of himself by doing this song.

Review: I enjoyed the film immensely and the soundtrack CD even more. It concerned the music of my late youth when Peter Seeger was God and Bob Dylan the coming genius. Folk music was about to boom and I loved it. Many of the songs on the CD were those I knew and sang at the time, so it was possible to wallow in the nostalgia of a time long past. There is little doubt that the star of the film, Oscar Isaac, is a great talent and his rendition of songs, both in the film and on the CD, is exceptional. He would have been a significant player in the folk scene of the early 60s.I heartily recommend this CD.
