A quick rundown of this product’s key features:
The world-famous Miracle Mile in Los Angeles was shaped into a great commercial and cultural district by the city’s tremendous urban expansion in the early twentieth century. Its origins along Wilshire Boulevard are directly related to the twin LA booms in auto travel and real estate ventures. Once the home of such famous stores as the May Company, Silverwood’s, Coulter’s and Desmond’s, as well as Streamline Moderne and Art Deco architecture, Miracle Mile has boasted the La Brea Tar Pits and Farmer’s Market, Gilmore Field and CBS Television City, as well as Pan Pacific Park and Museum Row. Join author Ruth Wallach, head of the University of Southern California’s Architecture and Fine Arts Library, for this tour through the most emblematic neighborhood of twentieth-century Los Angeles development.

Title: good, thorough history
Review: Most books about the history of Los Angeles tend to be light on real history and heavy on photographs and nostalgia. This small paperback is different. Although it contains a number of interesting photos the point is a thorough, well-researched history of the so-called Miracle Mile shopping district.Located on Wilshire Blvd. between downtown Los Angeles and the beach cities, the Miracle Mile reached its glamorous apex during the decades before and after WWII. Lined with famous department stores backing onto upscale residential neighborhoods, it featured an urban/suburban mix that typified Los Angeles real estate development during the mid 20th century. Wallach weaves past and present together to tell the story of this part of the city in a book that is packed with valuable information.

Review: I was expecting a book more along the lines of one of the Arcadia photo history books. This was more of a narrative of the history, and centered on the commercial development of the Miracle Mile.
