Title: Wow. Almost..too good
Review: I’ve been a Har Mar fan since I first saw him in a choir robe stealing the show from Atom and His Package with nothing but a MiniDisc player as his “DJ” and I think he just keeps getting better. This album is a departure from those previous, but it still makes me want to dance and…”dance” as well.Fans of old school R&B will love this album for its lo-fi 60s vibe and old Har Mar fans will appreciate the new direction. Considering Sean AKA Har Mar’s pop roots and tendency toward darker lyrics, fans of both Sean Na Na and Har Mar Superstar are likely to see this as a perfect marriage of his and his alter ego’s musical styles.Bye Bye 17 is simply perfect from start to finish. I’m going to listen to it again right now.

Title: Definitely a keeper.
Review: Har Mar Superstar brings your ears a soulful throw back experience with Bye Bye 17. I’m a fan of nearly any soul/funk/r&b and this album really kills it. You would be fooled thinking this was a re-release of some forgotten 70’s album, but that is just the thoughtful work put into the recording. The vinyl is a nice weight, probably 160-180 grams. The jacket is a semi-gloss finish and the sleeve is charcoal colored with a Cult Records printed on it. It includes a digital download card that gives you high quality mp3 files. All in all, great album and it earns a place in the record collection.

Title: Lots of ear worms
Review: I downloaded this after Amazon “suggested” I’d like it. I wonder what that says about me. I didn’t read the reviews, didn’t know anything about the artist, just previewed a few tracks, dug the funky grooves and was like, “sure, ok.” So, a few rhythm bruises later I guess this guy is a bit of a performance artist, but you know what? The tracks are still groovy and I am still digging them.

Title: Great throwback album!
Review: I hadn’t heard Har Mar’s previous music, but after hearing his new single (Lady, You Shot Me) on the radio I was very intrigued!I enjoy every last track on this album, a lot of fun funky songs with an old-school vibe to them and great band instrumentals. I enjoyed this album so much that I ended up going solo (last minute) to one of his performances and it was a blast! From what I’m discovering with his past work, this album is a departure from his usual wacky hip-hop and pop songs, so if you’ve written him off because of those I would give this album a shot!

Title: wow — i LOVE this album
Review: Just discovered Har Mar Superstar. Man where have I been? This album is one solid, strong piece of rock ‘n roll slash funk slash r&b. It’s powered from start to finish. Not one bad track. It’s engaging all the way through. I usually pass on r&b and funk, but not this time. This time I’ll stop to take it all in, because Har Mar does such a wonderful job on this. This is the freshest album I’ve heard in many years. I can’t recommend it highly enough. I’m sold, Har Mar. You da man!

Title: Surprisingly Good
Review: I first heard Lady You Shot Me on an NPR segment and fell in love. The more I read about this man, the more intriguing he is. You wouldn’t believe such a soulful voice would come out of a pudgy, balding white guy with a pencil-thin mustache, but there you go. If you like the samples of his music, go on and grab the whole album. My favorite songs are Lady You Shot Me and Restless Legs, but all of them are gems.

Title: Not a bad addition to the discography
Review: The album starts off strong and has a few enjoyable songs but then it seems to fade in the second half, which becomes mostly forgettable. It’s not a bad album but not among his best.

Title: Love it.
Review: I don’t know where to start. “Lady, You Shot Me” is so retro and spectacular. “Everywhere I’m Local” is the same brand of genius. I think “Restless Leg” wins for me. Great R&B feel from this MN native (probably while I love him so much). It’s upbeat and would absolutely fit on a Genius playlist with Mayer Hawthorne. Maybe I would call it “pop-soul.” It’s easy to listen to and addictive. He’s a talent. That’s for sure.

Review: Har Mar Superstar has always impressed me for his funky music and presentation – The Handler struck me as a very good album, really a lot of fun, plus it had that great photo of Har Mar’s butt, the suggestion thereof at least, on the back of the disc! And this surely preceded Jake Shears’ image, and is more subtle! The presentation is more minimal than the first album, with the cover image being about all you get. Har Mar still makes something out of his low-slung jeans, yet the whole thing is very ironic. The songs are also a lot of fun – with excellent sound and tunes, it sounds like a bone fide Motown album, and a very effective one at that. Restless Leg is a bit like Diana Ross’s Chain Reaction, with verse one addressed to a boy and verse two to a girl, unless I’ve misunderstood the lyrics (which are not printed). With Har Mar anything is possible, in the best sense! Is there a bit of The Who in there as well? We Don’t Sleep is a particularly cool track that defies definition, unpredictable from one bar to the next, changing tempo, undecided about its genre, even going into falsetto at odd moments of high expressiveness. His tongue is firmly in his cheek, and he doesn’t want to be spanking his girl, for instance and can just air the issue straight out. Such a life-affirming approach … modern, open, cushioning, in a word, a really fun guy. He has an appealing voice, surrounding himself with an excellent band – check out Prisoner to get the full blast of those horns – the funk, the swing of it.

Review: Having been a long time Har Mar fan I was really excited about this new album but also a little hesitant. I love his back catalogue, the humour the crazy beats and the fun songs – I knew this was going to be a step in a different direction. All I can say is WOW, I absolutely love it. The tunes are so soulful and sexy. The lyrics are heartfelt and still funny. I liked it at first but after 3 listens I was hooked, Tracks 1, 2 and 10 stand out for me as some of the best songs I’ve heard in the last few years – absolute classics. If you’ve heard of Har Mar before then buy this album, if you’ve never heard of him then buy this album because you’re in for a funky, soul drenched treat. He has the voice of an angel and the wit of a stand-up, Har Mar; you rock.If you ever get the chance to see him live you are in for one of the best gigs you have ever witnessed; really go check him out.
