Title: Blu-ray Offers A Fantastic HD Presentation
Review: As per usual, this is a review of the Vinegar Syndrome Blu-ray release of Incubus, not a film review. If you are reading this, you probably already love Incubus but, in case you don’t, this won’t cover plot details or film quality. One note of importance, if you haven’t seen the film, this review IS SAFE to read but DON’T read the back of the Blu-ray cover. On to the details….In 2018, after many years of waiting, we finally have a Blu-ray release of John Hough’s Incubus, fully intact and uncut, in the original aspect ratio, with a beautifully restored picture and fantastic audio. The restoration artists over at Vinegar Syndrome were able to use the original 35mm negative with only a few sections, here and there, in one reel of the film, requiring a print to be used as a stand-in, due to damage. I couldn’t tell the difference in the few sections where the print was used, owing to the work they put into matching color and brightness, and, so found the transitions seamless. However, my closest friend said he was able to detect a slight difference in those moments, just so you are aware.Having owned so many previous versions, including foreign and fan-traded copies, the digital version and the DVD from Scorpion, which was the best presentation ever available, until now, I can honestly say that this Blu-ray looks better than I ever believed this film could look. That is, again, owing to the efforts of the restorers. They didn’t quit until the flaws, including lines and specs and color shifts, were corrected, allowing the film to retain grain while not appearing dusty or damaged or faded. The picture is on par with the best restorations I’ve seen from them and I highly recommend this version over all others. As to sound, the film sounds as good as it ever has, to my ears, and is in keeping with what I heard on the Scorpion restoration, which used the best sound I had heard to that point but was not an HD presentation. This seems either the same or very slightly better and, again, represents the best sound available for this film.Special Features abound, with the inclusion of two nearly half-hour interviews, one with the director and one with the cinematographer, and a twenty-minute interview with one of the several lead actors, an audio commentary and trailers. However, here, I must elaborate on the warning at the beginning of this review. I regret to inform you of the huge flaw with the release: The company titled that interview with the one person who acted in the film, who I will not identify, in such a way as to give away the plot.To put it in other words, the title of one of the special features is a huge spoiler. As such, if you have not seen this film and have decided to purchase it based on recommendations, DON’T read the back of the Blu-ray package and DON’T load the special features menu until after you have watched the film. The aforementioned is the kind of mistake that fans like me can make rather easily. When you have seen a film like this enough times, actors and the characters they play can become so closely linked that we can forget others don’t have a clue which actor in the film would be playing what role, just by looking at them. The hero, the victim, the slasher in the slasher film, whoever it is, can end up so identifiable to us that we can forget there are others who don’t know it all, just by looking at that cast list. I won’t say which character the person plays but,I will say, try not to ruin it for yourself, if you have never seen the film.Essentially, with the exception of the unfortunately spoilerific special feature title, a title appearing both on the back of the package and in the list of special features, this is the definitive edition of Incubus and I can’t recommend it highly enough. I loved it. I was thrilled to see it. I hope that, if this is the one for you, you will enjoy it as much as I did.Good luck finding a film that makes you happy.

Title: David Lynch’s The Silence of the Lambs
Review: There’s a lot of things to discuss about The Incubus. That’s one of the movie’s strengths, it’s interesting. But it makes it hard to review without major spoilers. There are questions you’ll have about what’s up with various characters while watching. Whether that’s all tied up by the end, or whether it is good or bad film making is hard to talk about without ruining things. I’ll put further comments at the end. It’s nominally a slasher movie with whodunit elements. Despite that and the lurid subject matter it doesn’t feel trashy. The kill scenes are upsetting despite not being especially graphic, for the most part. And when there’s nudity it’s more liable to make you feel uncomfortable than aroused. This is more Silence of the Lambs than Sorority House Massacre. Not that it’s as good as Lambs, but on the sliding scale of Exploitation to Serious Drama in movies about horrible murder it’s toward the classy end. I joked about David Lynch in my review title. Apparently he was at one point slated to direct this, and it’s easy to see why. There’s lots of weird psychological themes, and dreams, and of course covert supernaturalism. The mood is tense, grim and desperate. The ending hits like a freight train. But enough talk. Was I engaged while watching it? Very much yes. Is it a good movie? Mostly it’s great, with some issues I can’t explain without spoilers.Meta/Spoiler stuff:The movie’s biggest problem center around John Cassavetes’ character, and they aren’t really thrown into relief until the credits roll. He is spectacularly creepy. He has a slightly creepy relationship with his daughter. He has a spectacularly creepy and inexplicable relationship with a new reporter in town because she’s the twin of a dead age-inappropriate ex he may have killed. No really. He stares unblinkingly at people with a leering Joker grin. There are a lot of long shots of him leering at people. He has a weird habit of grabbing people’s faces and kneading them like dough. I honestly don’t know if it’s intentional or what we as the audience are supposed to make of it. Half way through I wondered that if he wasn’t the titular Incubus he might be a perverted psychopath. Like a human counterpart to the literal demon. He isn’t. And the kicker is it doesn’t matter and isn’t resolved. Maybe it was supposed to be a red herring. I think I love this movie. But if you hate it it’s probably gonna be because of this character. Either because you can’t stand him personally, or because you get angry at all the loose plot threads hanging off him.

Title: Top Quality B level horror flick
Review: Totally awesome movie! I guess many people just can’t appreciate the drama of it. It’s wonderfully complex and very well acted, the cinematography and scene construction is top class for a B movie, the conclusion is unguessable right down to the finish. Very well done and worth 5 stars!UPDATE: You know I must also add that many viewers will probably be turned off by the powerlessness of the female rape victims. In the movie they are just totally scared victims who can’t, and don’t, fight back in any way. In that sense this movie is out of step with more modern sensibilities that wish to see women as capable of defending themselves totally, or at least to a high degree. So in that manner the movie seems sort of “1950’s-ish”. I didn’t 100% like that aspect myself, but it doesn’t have to interfere with the production qualities of the movie.

Review: PLOT…A small town doctor and sheriff join forces to track down a vicious sex-killer who may be the indestructible incarnation of a demon spawned from hell.Incubus is another 80’s gem that needs to be seen, a very cool horror which is very different to your usual style of slashers etc from the time, delving a little more into the supernatural, the movie is shot really well with some creative camera shots that are cool, solid cast from back then, some lovely ladies too, some nudity at times, plenty shock bloody moments and some cool creature effect make-up towards the end, the movie leaves you guessing until the end where there is a cool twist on the whole events of the story! This is yet again another cool movie for your 80’s collection, the French limited edition version is very good, comes with the Blu-ray and DVD versions of the movie, its more affordable than the USA Import version and is better presented.Blu-ray looks great in HDFeatures include interviews with cast and filmmakers in English (subtitles can be turned off)Region B, Running time 92mins (UNCUT I assume as it runs the same as the Vinegar Syndrome version)1981, French or English audio, Subtitles can be turned off while watching the English version.Very cool slipcase with fold out insert, includes booklet (French text)The packaging is slightly bigger than usual for a Blu-ray (DVD size)
