Title: Wish I had done this sooner
Review: If you are on the fence about buying a kitchen composter—it’s time to make your move. I looked at dozens of composters and read a lot of reviews before deciding on Luma. Pricing was a big issue; Luma wasn’t the cheapest, but it wasn’t the most expensive either. I like the fact that I don’t have to buy special pods or enhancements.I haven’t had this very long, but so far I love it. It’s very quiet. I have noticed only the slightest odor when standing very close—as in looking through the clear lid to see what’s going on. The 1.5 liter container reduces a full container down to a small amount of compost that resembles peat moss. Now my husband doesn’t have to trek into the backyard to our composting bin. No more shoveling a path to the compost bin during winter.I have multiple raised garden beds. Can’t wait to see how my plants thrive.I wish I had bought this sooner.

Title: More of a grinder / dehydrator, limited capacity, but good quality
Review: We received this as a Christmas gift and have used it every day since. It functions by rough chopping and drying scraps. It’s like a heavy duty bread machine, heating and rotating the contents. It gets hot enough to make liquids sizzle as the scraps dry, so it’s also cooking them down as they dry out. It seems to be well built. The instructions were easy to understand.Pros:It significantly reduces the volume of waste going to the compost pile.It allows us to compost items we would not take directly to the compost pile because they stink or attract wild animals, e.g., meat, shellfish, dairy, small bones, leftover food.It makes quick work of ordinary kitchen waste like coffee grounds, tea bags (no effect on the strings, but no harm noted), fruit and vegetable peels, stale bread, baking mistakes, leftovers, etc. We also add litter from houseplants. It’s a lot of fun to watch, at least the first few times. It’s reasonably quiet and mostly odor free.Cons:It’s barely large enough for a day of kitchen and houseplant scraps. I cut up a small pineapple and put the rind and both ends in with a single coffee filter. There was no room for the leaves, which turned out to be too stringy for this machine to break down. Crab legs from New Year’s Eve filled two batches. The carbon filter was no match for the odor of the crab legs. The carbon filter is only supposed to last 300 hours (maybe 60 uses?) and costs $29 to replace. The instructions have suggestions to prolong its life.It takes a lot of counter space. We’re having thoughts about buying a second, covered bucket (~$60.00 US) to keep in the kitchen and putting the machine out in the garage. The bucket that comes with the machine has no cover. We have been composting for years. Back in 2011, we purchased a stainless steel compost pail for the kitchen (Norpro 1.5 Gallon Stainless Steel Compost Keeper). It has a carbon filter in the lid we’ve replaced once. When it’s full, we dump it into four covered buckets we keep in the garage. When they’re full, we dump them in the tractor bucket and transport to the compost pile, which we stir with the tractor. We live in a dry climate, so we add a lot of liquids, including tea, coffee, pickle juice, etc., to help with the process.Because of the limited capacity of this product and the fact that it doesn’t work well with fibrous and hard, solid waste, we will probably keep our stainless pail for these items and the liquids and use it alongside the new machine. So less counter space than before. The jury is still out.

Title: Love, love, love this composter.
Review: Gross kitchen waste very nicely crushed and dried. You can still see melon seeds in the final product. What went in was a gloppy mess of vegetable scraps, melon rind, avocado peel, egg shells and coffee grounds that spent too long in my counter top food scraps bin. I included a quick video of it crushing up a bunch of egg shells, too. Very quiet. No more waiting months and tending my outdoor compost. So worth the money.

Title: “New” = …used??
Review: I spent a lot of time deciding what to get my husband for a gift, and this fit the bill in a lot of ways. Delivered recently and all packaging opened today, only to find it dirty. Imagine opening up a gift to find it dirty. I selected “buy new” at checkout so I don’t know how it happened.
