Title: Greatness in a heartbeat
Review: When I first entered filmschool over forty years ago, there were legends in the film score industry – Herrmann, Korngold, Steiner, Goldsmith, Barry, North, and many others. First and foremost was Alfred Newman, the most honored and respected among his peers. No one, in my mind, could ever take his place… until that morning of May 25th, 1977 when I was sitting in Grauman’s and John Williams blew me away. I had to go back and watch “Jaws” after that. Then I began to search his background and discovered a master in the building. By the time “Star Wars” premiered, Williams had already paid his dues and worked with the likes of Newman and Herrmann. As of this writing, I am convinced that John Williams is the greatest film composer of all time… and ET is probably one of his best, if not the best, of his works. By the time you reach the end of this journey through the sound of his orchestra, you’ve been treated to a piano concerto and several symphonies. But it is the triumphant ascension into the heavens of the ressurrected ET (any religious similarities?) that Williams has given us an orchestral tour de force.

Review: John William’s score of E.T. The Extra Terrestrial is unparalleled in today’s age. When was the last time you heard a score and were brought back to the film itself? Transpose the film into sound and this score is what you get.Despite the obvious fact that this score is memorable and a stroke of genius in the world of filmmaking, it stands on its own as a masterpiece in the world of music.
