Title: Cute and a great jumping off point for conversation but not super accurate
Review: I thought this book would be a fun way to introduce my 3-year old to our nation’s history. It’s very cute, and who doesn’t love the Berenstain Bears? The book is centered around the theme of the bears preparing for and participating in a 4th of July parade. It’s a cute story for sure but I wish they’d focused a bit more on accuracy in a couple of instances:1) The book uses a Biblical reference to call America the Land of Milk and Honey. As a Christian this is frustrating because it uses the verse out of context as the BIble does not identify America. That said it’s a point that went over my child’s head (and probably always will) and should it need to be addressed, we are capable of disucssing what the Bible reference is really about.2) They’ve taken some artistic liberty with details such as referring to the Liberty Bell as the Libearty Bell. They also used the song title “The Stars and Bears Forver” rather than the Stars and Stripes Forever. While neither of these are dealbreakers and are certainly thematic, fun alterations, as a teacher it frustrates me a bit to change things like this as the story loses nothing by keeping the true titles – in fact, the book gains educational value by doing so.Neither of these are huge issues (which is why I only knocked 1-star off my rating) but had the publishers not misused these references, the book would have been fantastic. All that to say, I’m glad we’ve added this to our library as it gives our little on a base to begin getting excited about citizenship and learning about our Nation.
