Title: Melancholy Delight
Review: It might seem paradoxical that lusty England in its Golden Age, the age that produced Shakespeare and Sir Francis Drake, also produced a great legacy of music marked by a pervasive melancholy, the music of Dowland, Byrd, Lawes, Tye, and… Captain Tobias Hume. Civic life in England around 1600 was no doubt brimming with optimism and opportunity, but on the ground on the level of individual survival, it must have been an arduous and uncertain struggle for many if not most. Hume is a prime example. Little is known about his military career except that it wasn’t very rewarding. Born in 1569, in the year 1624 he retired to a charity institution for broken-down soldiers, where he died in 1645 after unsuccessfully petitioning the King for support. In 1605 and 1607, when he was in his thirties, he published two books of music, from which these Musicall Humors are taken. They are beloved of viola da gamba players for their melancholy whimsy. Hume himself must have been a skilled gambist; these pieces are among the first to treat the newly-popular gamba as a solo instrument, and also among the first to exploit the possibilities of notating gamba music in tablature, opening the way to considerable virtuosity. One has to see something of a thwarted genius in Captain Hume, a composer of great originality whose penury limited his scope.The music we have, however, is a small treasure comparable to the poetry of Thomas Wyatt or the plays of Christopher Marlowe. No one has treated it with as much reverence as Jordi Savall, the premiere virtuoso of the viola da gamba in modern times. This CD features Savall doing what he does best, playing the lyra (tablature) gamba in all of its melancholy grace. Savall has produced a number of recordings of Hume’s music, notably including “Poeticall Musicke” on DHM, a performance with a ‘broken consort’ (mixed ensemble) of artful Elizabethan dances and songs. The musicians on that disk include some of the superstars of Early Music: Bruce Dickey on cornetto, Paul Hillier and Montserrat Figueras singing, and Savall himself.All in all, this CD of Musicall Humors (note the pun on Hume’s own name) is a “balmy” performance in both common senses of the word. That is, it’s a delightful musical diversion, and an odd exhibit of musical eccentricity. In Hume’s case, those two senses seem inseparable.

Title: Excellent viol chamber music.
Review: If you like chamber music, this is one of the best. Jordi Savall is the foremost master of the viol da gamba and I was fortunate to see him perform in person at the Lobero theater. This recording lives up to his live performance. Track number 5, “Harke, harke” demonstrates pizzicato and col legno battuto technique (mentioned historically) for the first time by Tobias Hume. The music transports you to a different time…

Title: A SPECIAL CD
Review: Well after 2 years owning this CD, I think its time to pay tribute to one of the most beloved CDs I own. Why ¿? Well because it is special, I would never expect such a cheerful and old daily musical surprise. Played so well by Savall-Hesperion as they are used to.It is also one of the best recordings I own, fortunatelly transfered into a only-CD (avoid hybrid sacd, when playing only CD transport) and this is important when you really expect to hear the armonic textures, timber and transitories of Savalls Barac Norman instrument.I give it five stars, missing six or seven…!

Title: The Spirit of Gambo
Review: Tobias Hume’s “Musicall Humors” was his first (of only two) music publication in 1605; it contained 117 pieces, 104 of them for Hume’s favorite instrument the viola da gamba. Jordi Savall first made a recording of 13 of these solo pieces back in 1983 on Astrée Captaine Tobias Hume: Musicall Humours 1605 , which is probably no longer available. But, in March 2004 he re-made the entire contents of that album for this Alia Vox, with 7 additional items as well, and which sounds a whole lot better. I must confess, I prefer to hear Hume’s music in consort settings, such as this Hume: Poeticall Musicke , or my favorite Passion of Musick (this later is a most fine collection, offering 5 of Hume’s 7 known songs, items for consort, and solo viola pieces, giving one an excellent overview of his creative work). Still, for Hume’s dark, melancholy works, this entry by Jordi Savall is near the top.

Review: Io sono un grande appassionato di questo meraviglioso strumento a legno, e se poi..lo suona Jordi Savall il mio piacere raggiunge il culmine, eh si! perche’ e’ lui l’artista che riesce meglio di altri suoi colleghi a tirar fuori la vera anima del suono della viola di gamba, il suo talento, e la sua bravura hanno raggiunto un livello davvero molto molto alto. In questo campo lui e’ un riferimento assoluto.Le sue suonate sono fantastiche, ed il merito di cosi tanta bonta’ sonica sta sicuramente nella parte armonica, questo mosaico e’ fatto da infinite sfaccettature cromatiche, ebbene… sembra quasi impossibile che un semplice strumento a legno possa rilasciare questi suoni, sono cosi tante le vibrazioni prodotte dell’archetto sulle corde, e dei rilasci sui pizzicati che le note appaioni calde e bellissime, la loro matericita’ , il loro bel timbro ambrato, e la loro immanenza e’ tale che sembra di avere Savall a pochi metri da chi lo ascolta, a tale riguardo ascoltate la traccia n.5 ed avrete un chiaro riferimento delle enormi potenzialita’ sonore di questo antico strumento, per me questa registrazione per solo “Viola di Gamba” e’ senz’altro una fra le migliori che io abbia mai ascoltato, gli ingegneri del suono della Alia Vox hanno confezionato un lavoro davvero sublime, per mia opinione personale posso dire che siamo al cospetto di un capolavoro. E badate ….bene che non sto esagerando. Questo cd fara’ sicuramente la gioia dei molti appassionati del bel suono, e anche degli Audiophili. Ascoltate con attenzione la traccia n.ro 5 a volume un po più alto del solito, e capirete…cosa intendevo dire, ma purtroppo queste sensazioni non si possono raccontare con le parole, questa meravigliosa musica, e la voce della viola di gamba vanno solo ascoltate di persona. Magia allo stato puro !! Che meraviglia ..!!
