Title: Fun, quick filler game
Review: Galaxy Rush by Last Night Games is a fun, quick 2 player card game that is easy to set up (it does require a bit of space on the table though!), easy to learn and fast to play. The basic premise of the game is that you are 2 space pilots trying to collect resources and go on expeditions to earn enough reputation to be the best in the galaxy. This is done over four galactic “seasons” (I’m not sure exactly what a galactic season is in the real world, but here each season is one round). There is a bit of set collection and engine building, but nothing too heavy.Play is done on the 2 tracks with the player on track 1 always going first. You can decide to do an “acceleration” move which jumps you ahead 2 spaces to pass another play at the expense of losing the resources/expeditions on the skipped space. Once a player reaches the end of the tracks, the next rounds cards are placed down and play begins again. You earn reputation by travelling farther and farther, completing discoveries (which require resources to complete) and working to meet the public goals. Each player will also make predictions at the end of the first 3 rounds which can also earn reputation if your predict correctly. These are things like who will travel the farthest, who will win the least medals or collect the fewest discoveries. At the end of the fourth round, tally up reputation points and whoever has the highest wins. The game plays in about 20 minutes, which makes it a nice filler game. The components are a mixed bag. The cards are very nice card stock and the cardboard tokens are thick. The artwork is a bit muted though. There is also a pad of paper scoring sheets. The insert is good quality but doesn’t give enough room for sleeved cards should you wish to go that route. Based on how fast the game plays and the fact that it requires shuffling, if you play it a lot, you are going to want sleeves to protect the life of the cards. The games states ages 10+ but, I think even and 8 or 9 yr old could play as it isn’t that complicated a game.Overall, for a filler game, I think it’s a good purchase. It is easy to learn and teach, plays fast and can be played by beginners as well as more advanced players. I think that, just based on the component quality it is worth the $29.99 asking price.

Title: Great Two player game!
Review: When I first saw the box for this game, I thought that it was for kids. But, I owned a previous game from the same manufacturer and I liked it, so I decided to give this a chance.I’m glad that I did! It is a highly strategic “set collecting” card game that requires players to make MANY thought provoking decisions. I love the Space Race premise and the theming of the game really does shine through. Making a move in this game involves coordination among earning achievements (both short and long term), collecting resource cards, earning Discovery cards and making correct predictions….whew! This game requires a great deal of thought and is a fantastic little two player card game. The “board” is basically constructed from an array of cards. The instructions are well done and easy to follow. All of the components are of high quality – most of them are cards. It is worth noting that this game requires quite a large surface area to spread out. And, for those of us that require reading glasses, some of the backgrounds on a few cards make reading them a little difficult to read easily. The artwork on the cards matches the artwork shown on the box so there are a lot of dark blue/purple colors. Perhaps having text boxes with a white background would have made cards easier to read. The Achievement cards are noticeably devoid of artwork which I thought was an odd artistic decision considering the rest of the cards. And, the game comes with a pretty thick scoring pad that really makes it easy to tally scores at the end. Unlike many games where you can kind of tell who the winner will be, Galaxy Rush leaves you guessing right up until the end! I usually judge the balance of a game if two closely ranked players finish with scores that are close – and that is most certainly the case here. So, this little game is deceptive in that there is a TON of stuff going on in this little package. I will most certainly bring this game out again and again. One word of caution: there’s a lot of stuff to consider if you want to play this game with kids. It really is an adult game that might be appropriate for kids that are very game-savvy. Otherwise, it is on the more complex side. But it is complex in strategy only. The game is easy to learn and teach. I am very glad that I made the decision to add this to my board game library!

Title: More game in here than the box size suggests…
Review: Struggled to get this one out to the table because generally two-player games are reserved for abstract strategy games for me. This game certainly blends quite a few mechanics, you start with two tracks of “seasons” that you collect cards from based on some pretty simple turn-by-turn rules, these cards allow you to generate resources that can lead to discoveries. There are also VPs that can be scored by making predictions, you can complete expeditions to score points, or you can earn medals and score points. There is a lot going on, it isn’t too complicated, but it is certainly more complex that something like Lost Cities. One or two plays and you should have it all down, I think it is certainly a fun slightly-bigger-than-a-filler game/best of three games.
