A quick rundown of this product’s key features:

In this fresh, eye-opening global history, economist David McWilliams charts the relationship between humans and money―from clay tablets in Mesopotamia to cryptocurrency in Silicon Valley.

The story of humanity is inextricable from that of money. No innovation has defined our own evolution so thoroughly and changed the direction of our planet’s history so dramatically. And yet despite money’s primacy, most of us don’t truly understand it.

As leading economist David McWilliams shows, money is central to every aspect of our civilization, from the political to the artistic. “Money defines the relationship between worker and employer, buyer and seller, merchant and producer. But not only that: it also defines the bond between the governed and the governor, the state and the citizen. Money unlocks pleasure, puts a price on desire, art and creativity. It motivates us to strive, achieve, invent and take risks. Money also brings out humanity’s darker side, invoking greed, envy, hatred, violence and, of course, colonialism.”

In The History of Money, McWilliams takes us across the world, from the birthplace of money in ancient Babylon to the beginning of trade along the Silk Road, from Marrakech markets to Wall Street. Along the way, we meet a host of innovators, emperors, frauds, and speculators, who have disrupted society and transformed the way we live. Filled with memorable anecdotes, and with a foreword by Michael Lewis, The History of Money is an essential, extremely readable history of humanity’s most consequential invention.

Title: Surprisingly Good
Review: A friend recommended Money by David McWilliams, a British author, a 2024 publication with virtually no reputation in the US. I have no background in economics or finance, and found the book to be enlightening in describing the development of the concept of money, and its role in the creation of wealth and personal freedom in the world. Hardly a light read, but such a great insight in the role of money in the development of civilization.

Title: Like “Guns, Germs, &Steel” but about money
Review: Who would have guessed that a well documented book could make Sumerian tablets this much fun?Ordering the book was a hassle though. My copy came from the UK and while the seller was helpful the USPS shipping partner sat on it for weeks. Order was placed 10/6 and it arrived 10/28.

Review: It’s an amazing read about something I’ve personally always thought was pretty mundane and almost sinful.Yet McWilliams skill, something he has honed from with highly successful podcast, is that he renders the mundane and indeed obtuse into something revelatory, exciting and interesting. Here we learn what a humanity defining technology money truly is and as with all tech is following it’s own development path.

Review: A good read with lots of interesting facts and thoughts. Of course it is written from a point of view that money is a good thing. And there are some historical assumptions that I am not sure I would agree with or even support as good assumptions. But you read it and then do more research of your own. I learned a lot.
