A quick rundown of this product’s key features:

In war-torn medieval Japan, a young samurai lord struggles to retake his throne, but not by fighting. Hojo Tokiyuki will reclaim his birthright by running away!

In medieval Japan, eight-year-old Hojo Tokiyuki is the heir to the Kamakura shogunate. But the Hojo clan is in decline, and Tokiyuki’s peaceful days of playing hide-and-seek with his teachers come to an abrupt end when his clan is betrayed from within. The lone survivor of his family, Tokiyuki is the rightful heir to the throne, but to take it back, he’ll have to do what he does best—run away!

After the massacre of his family by the traitor Ashikaga Takauji, Tokiyuki flees with the help of a handful of loyal retainers who have also survived the purge. One of them is Suwa Yorishige, an ally of the Hojo clan and lord of Suwa province. The slightly odd Yorishige also claims to be clairvoyant and foretells that Tokiyuki will one day become the ruler of Japan. But for the moment, escaping from enemy territory is the priority!

Title: Fun and educational
Review: Love it so much! Already have the next four volumes now. Love that it’s historical and you learn so many things as you read. People complain that the art style is simple but I think it’s great because it gets the historical points across and doesn’t make everything more confusing with lots of extra details and skewed art styles.

Title: Funny yet serious manga debut
Review: The first of a new manga series, the first volume of “The Elusive Samurai” was an interesting debut for the new Shonen series. Set more than fifty years after the failed Mongol invasions of Japan, the ruling Shogunate (Hojo clan) is overthrown by a treacherous general who aims to dominate Japan. The last of his clan, heir-apparent Hojo Tokiyuki must survive and regain his place in a perilous world filled with dangers around every corner.Pros*Beautiful art cover – The front cover drew attention for its color.*Neglected era (Kamakura-era Japan, 1333) – A work of historical fiction, this story takes place in an period virtually to the general public (at least in the West), offering the opportunity to delve into a world that felt new and exciting to explore.*Cast of characters – Among the greatest strengths of this book is the small and intriguing cast of characters. The main protagonist of the series, Hojo Tokiyuki, is a young Prince who is infamous for his laziness yet legendary for his evasive skills. The man who rescues him and serves as his mentor, Suwa Yorishige, is an eccentric priest who functions as the main comic relief for a tragedy-filled story. Others include a tall and obscenely strong Shrine Maiden (Ayako), a rambunctious young warrior (Kojiro) and a shy yet sagacious Shinto Priestess (Shizuku).*Elements of caricature in art style – The protagonists and antagonists were often marked with certain features that symbolized a trait of importance while being funny to see (enemy lord famed for his eyesight has bulging eyes).Cons*Relatively simplistic art style – While funny to see and read, the distinctive art style of Mr. Yūsei did take some time to get used to. Some panels showed good detail on foreground but lack details on background.*Clashing themes – Throughout the course of the story it felt like two themes (comedic and serious) were often clashing with one another.SummaryOverall, an intriguing entry for a unique new Shonen series. It is full of heart and humor. Fans of Historical Fiction may or may not find this to their liking. Fans of Yūsei Matsui’s previous work (Assassination Classroom) may like this story.

Title: Really enjoyed
Review: I am obsessed with Assassination Classroom so I knew I had to have this. So far it is great. The art is absolutely stunning, some of the best I have seen. Cannot wait to see what happens in the next book. He is a clever little fox, and good at evading danger. In some ways it reminds me of Rankings of Kings. Just buy it.

Review: Elusive Samurai is made by the same author as Assassination Classroom, an anime I thoroughly enjoyed – but a manga I couldn’t get into. It seems it strikes again.I’m not sure what it is, there’s nothing objectively wrong with the volume, however, it just falls into the side of pushing myself through each chapter. The art is clean and the colours on the cover are wonderful, the story just falls a little flat.

Review: The main appeal to me is the art. It is not a “nice” story. Violence, betrayal etc galore. Will check out volume 2.
