Title: Had my wife play it to see if she likes it. Ended up playing 3 times that night.
Review: This is an awesome game. Great themed worker placement/ resources management game. My wife is a little picky about what board games she plays. She loves Splendor, Azul, Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle, Lord’s of Waterdeep and Star Wars Deck building game. I wanted to get this when I saw it on KS but couldn’t stomach the price. Got it on sale and brought it to the table. We watched a how to play video and jumped it. She won the first game and wanted to go again. Won the second game and told me to set it up a 3rd time. I finally was able to put it away because I didn’t feel like losing a 4th time that night. The art is wonderful and pieces feel good. Cards are thicker and linen finished. Going to need to sleeve them since this game is getting alot of use already. Not a hard game to learn and replayability is high.

Title: Packaging
Review: Waited almost a month to get the game. Got it with a dent on the box packaging that went through and also dented the box of the game. I know it isn’t the fault of the seller as this incident must have happened during transportation with the courier. Will still play and enjoy the game as it wont affect gameplay, just bummed since Andrew Bosley did a great cover art here. Sharing this experience here so people can check their couriers when handling the package.

Title: Top of the line board game
Review: If you are a board gamer that loves outdoor themes, this is a must. Gorgeous art specific to the John Muir trail in California. I’m excited for the sequel which will be based in Arizona.

Title: Disappointing for solo players 1 star, for group play 4 stars
Review: I was told about this game from a coworker and it sounded interesting so I thought I would give it a try. A very important point to be aware of with this game is that there are two vastly different versions. The people who backed this game on Kickstarter have a much better version of this game than what you are buying here. The publisher of this game decided to withhold critical game play elements from the retail version of this game. My review is of the retail version of this game. Be aware that other reviewers may be reviewing the Kickstarter version and therefore are likely to have a better opinion based upon the fact they have more game that those who buy the retail version.First the good. The game art is beautiful and they did an excellent job of translating hiking the John Muir Trail into a board game. The rules are easy to learn and the game flows quite well with fairly quick gameplay. At its heart this is a worker-placement resource-management game where each day you have a limited number of turns you can take that involve gaining resources, collection field guide or destination cards, or hiking further along the trail. While getting to the end of the trail is important, you cannot win the game without accomplishing this, this game is more about “All about the journey than the destination” so the winner is not the one who completes the trail first, but rather who had the best experience along the way, who visited the most destinations, who witnessed the most flora and fauna, and so forth. The game theming is well done and everything ties in quite nicely with the mechanics of the game. There are a few somewhat oddities like the elevation track being disconnected from the hiking track, but in all reality moving along the elevation track is just as important is moving along the trail so this disconnection is actually pretty easy to overlook. Resource usage makes sense, you need to expend food and water everyday, and use resources for collecting cards and hiking. Some connections are a little loose like needing trees to hike, but the way I see it is that maybe you need the trees for shade from the sun or something along that line, so even with the loose connections they can be abstracted in a way that can fit in.Now for the bad. I am primarily a solo gamer and even tho this game claims it can be played with from 1 to 4 players, the game really falls flat for solo players. Although they developed a robo-hiker to make the game more interesting for solo, they chose to only make that available for the Kickstarter backers and exclude this from the retail version of this game and instead only include a very un-inspiring Beat Your Own Score variant. Plus with this being a worker-placement game, without a competitor the game is extremely easy, as you never have to worry about getting the resources you need because somebody else is occupying the space you need. As such the first 1 or 2 plays are fun, and after that the game becomes extremely boring.Should you buy this? If you are primarily a solo player, skip this game, it is not worth it, you will enjoy 1 or 2 plays and then you will never play it again because it becomes boring very quickly. As a family game or a group game, then this game is worth while, it is easy to learn and fast to play and with the competition of other players there is no guaranteed “win” like the included solo mode, however keep in mind that even for group play the version being sold here is a crippled version of the game. If at all possible find a Kickstarter version of this game rather than buying the one here. The retail version of this game lacks game play elements that the Kickstarter only version has.

Title: A game that feels like hiking
Review: This is a well thought out fun game that feels like hiking. It is way more like being outside than similar themed games like Parks. There is a lot more going on in the game then say Parks or Cascadia. Very thematic to the John Muir trail. Lots of different things you can do on your turn. Beautiful art and components. Rule book is very easy to follow and understand. Has a solo mode too. There is more to it than say a game like Trekking the National Parks or Parks, so keep in mind that while the game is far from heavy, it is heavier than other games with this theme. Lots of ways to play the game and lots of different ways to score points. A great game.

Title: Great hiking game
Review: This game is wonderful. First, it is gorgeous, the pictures are amazing, so one really feels like they are hiking on that trail. The mechanics make sense and fit quite well with the theme. It is a lot of fun to hike along the trail, go on side trips, gain experience. Our games tend to last about 2 hours (2 to 3 persons). Who can play? The box says 14+, but a kid that is used to play lots of board games will be able to play at around 12. I am looking forward to the next game in that collection.
