Review: This is one gorgeous book! I’m a MASSIVE fan of the Dead Space franchise, so this book was a must-own for me. The whole thing is laid out spectacularly, and has a ton of comprehensive content. If you or someone in your life is a fan of this epic horror series, definitely consider picking this up. Makes for a great gift idea! Zero complaints and highly recommended.

Title: Quality artwork that’s difficult to see in less-than-ideal-lighting
Review: The pros are the artwork looks great and each artwork takes up a lot of page real estate so there’s little in the way of empty spaces on pages. The issue is the nature of the concept art being dark and decrepit is it is really hard to see in dimly lit rooms. If its not daytime and you don’t have a ceiling light on then you need to be near or underneath a lamp to get the full visual of the artwork on display. On certain pages, using a smartphone flashlight actually highlights intricate texture and material works on walls that I would’ve missed otherwise.I’m in my early 30s so my eyesight is fine and out of the 10 artbooks I own, this is the only one I had trouble seeing. You know how in games you can adjust the gamma setting to make the game brighter? Someone needed to do that with this book.

Review: I pre-ordered The Art of Dead Space by Dark Horse Books as soon as it was available, and it exceeded expectations. As a long-time fan of the sci-fi horror franchise, I was ecstatic with the 2023 remake by Motive Studio which beautifully honoured the original game while expanding and improving it in all the right ways.This 224-page collection features a comprehensive look at the game’s visual development. From concept art, character sheets, environment designs, suit iterations, weapons/tool upgrades and visceral necromorphs, it showcases the incredible artistry and meticulous care that went into bringing the chilling world of Dead Space back to life.A standout feature for me is the side-by-side comparisons of the original and the remake, emphasizing the exceptional dedication that went into modernising the visuals. This particularly speaks volumes with the improved character models!The hardcover presentation is impressive, although I have one small critique regarding the white bookbinding cord (see photos) which looks jarring against the dark colour palette. A black thread would have been more inconspicuous. Despite this, everything else is overwhelmingly positive.If you were blown away by the remake’s faithfulness to the original video game, while also elevating it visually, Dark Horse’s The Art of Dead Space is a must-have companion piece to add to your collection to one of the best horror remakes of all time.
