Title: A Fun, Light Eurogame
Review: In Embark, 2-5 players attempt to score the most points while setting out for an island paradise. The island is composed of a number of island boards set next to each other. At the bottom of each are two piers, each with a letter in alphabetical order. Each player has their own player board which features all of the island’s letters in boxes, as well as a warehouse and a pub. Each player also has a player screen and a number of cubes. Boat cards are then distributed beneath each pier. Each boat is different, containing different numbers and combinations of spaces that correspond to spots on the island. Each round, players place cubes in the letter boxes behind the player screen. This is where they will assign their cubes if there is space on the boat. Players simultaneously reveal where they have placed their cubes, then take turns placing them on the boat. The spaces players can choose from are the colonist, who will create a farm once four colonists have arrived on the board; the explorer, who will form a line along the beach that unlocks points and other goodies; the miner, who works the mines and produces ore; the captain, who can become any of the those three when he lands; and the warrior, who will kick a cube off of an existing spot on the island board and take it for himself – though he cannot kick farmers off of completed farms. At the end of each round players will gain points for various factors. Once a player completes a farm, they instantly get points. At the beginning of the game players also get a special card that allows them to bend the rules at some point, giving them unique advantages throughout the rounds. At the end of a set number of rounds players engage in final scoring to determine the winner. Whoever has the most points wins Embark!Embark is fairly light Eurogame from Tasty Minstrel Games. It is designed by Philip duBarry, who has created some of my all-time favorite board games like Courtier and Black Orchestra – both classics in my book. There is real competition in Embark as players fight over the spaces on the boat so that they can complete their objectives and fulfill their strategy. Fans of lighter Eurogames will certainly get a kick out of it. While I recognize it as a good game, it’s not really my cup of tea. My tastes generally lean toward die rolling and more direct conflict. Still, this is a fun game that I enjoyed playing and wouldn’t mind hitting it again if someone else suggested it. However, I doubt I’ll be the one to recommend pulling it off the shelf. The Discriminating Gamer
