Title: Beautifully photographed and written
Review: Beautifully photographed and written. I particularly appreciate the historical and storytelling aspect that Ms. Oliveri uses to introduce her culinary offerings. It really adds a charming touch to her simple, yet elegant recipes. I recently made her “zucchini in vinegar” recipe for a dinner party and everyone raved about it – even those who were not particularly inclined toward zucchini loved it!!

Review: I have been collecting regional Italian cookbook for quite a while now. Very seldom do I find one that doesn’t duplicate a tradional local recipe found in another book. This book, however, is an exception. The author provides a number of delicious, tradional Calabrian dishes that I had not seen before. Well done!

Review: I was looking forward to receiving this book and scored it off my Wish List as a gift. It’s a very good looking book and an interesting read but if you want to cook, good luck. First the entire book is both in Italian and English, cozy idea, but basically you’re getting half a book since the other half whether you speak Italian or English is the same thing. I have an understanding of Italian but do refer to the text in English. The translation is at the least fair and cooking instructions are lacking and seem to sometimes leave you to your own decisions. Some of the ingredients, on the English pages, are things you cannot find in the USA or listed using the Italian name so you will need a very specific Italian/English dictionary to find what they are or a comparable substitution available in the USA. If you just remodeled you kitchen to “Italian County” this book would be perfect for the counter. If you want to cook then be wary unless your Calabrian grandmother lives next door.

La lettura delle 80 ricette tradizionali riproposte e sapientemente accompagnata da una delineazioni dei tratti più intimi, antropologici, storici e anche personali dell’autrice, che accompagnano il cibo.’La fresa è un pane da viaggio. La fresa (e i mille modi in cui la si chiama: fresella, fresina, frisiceddha ecc) è un pane per resistere al tempo e attraversare lo spazio. Pare che la usassero già i Crociati per le campagne militari e i pescatori per le lunghe battute di pesca.’Il piacevole corredo fotografico e le molte storie, spesso riflessioni e analisi, permetteranno al fortunato lettore di assaporare ben al di là della ricetta stessa, comprendendone il sapore intimo, fatto dalla fatica di donne e uomini nel loro periodare per posti e luoghi che ormai non ricordiamo più.Indubbiamente, nella mia breve citazione, non trovavo consono esporre ulteriori celebrazioni dell’autrice, ma ciò che mi ha realmente colpito, in alcune delle sue ‘lezioni’ pubbliche, è il culto del cibo come profonda espressione di elevata cultura primaria, di sapienza umana prima e, nella sua eccezione negativa, popolare dopo. Il piacere nella ricerca di un riscatto che si ottiene ritornando alle origini, che spesso non sono poi cosi lontane, ma il giusto tragitto è pur sempre segnato dalle ricette delle nonne. L’ho acquistato per fare un regalo ed ha avuto un successoneIl venditore è stato molto gentile, inizialmente avevo dimenticato di aggiungere il numero civico e mi hanno chiamato subito per chiedermelo (a differenza di poste italiane la quale ha trattenuto il pacco senza cercare di mettersi in contatto con me, né permettermi di mettermi in contatto con loro) e mi ha scritto quando la spedizione risultava in consegna e consegnata per avvisarmi, veramente un ottimo servizio.
