Title: A useful overview of the basic componants of self-image
Review: I’ve spent the last week reading through this book, highlighting key ideas, and doing the exercises. I’ve always struggled with low self-esteem, and enjoy reading books like this since they remind me of ways to work on creating a more positive self-image. What I’ve found over the years is that you have to be consistent about doing the work in order to get results. This _Self-Esteem for Dummies_ book provides a nice overview of some of the key ways in which you can work on your self-image.Like other books in the For Dummies series, this book is clearly laid out and easy to read. Another reviewer provided a breakdown of the chapters, and they fall into several main sections:* The Lowdown on Self-Esteem* Expressing a Positive Attitude* Changing Your Negative Thoughts and Coming to Grips with Being a Perfectionist* Growing Your Self-Esteem* Dissolving Internal Barriers to Success in Love and Work* Nurturing Self-Esteem in OthersWhile I gleaned some new ideas and useful information while reading this book, I’ve rated this four stars instead of five because some of the discussions seemed a bit more superficial and quick than I’d like them to have been. It seemed like the authors tried to cram a lot of information into one book, rather than going into a lot of depth for each topic. They try to cover everything from eating well to dating to raising children to overcoming perfectionism — all topics which need more coverage than this book affords.I liked that the authors tried to cover everything that comprises our basic sense of self, but I’ve found richer, more complex discussions of ways to ameliorate your self-image by books written by psychotherapists who specialize in cognitive-based therapy and in self-image books that are more specialized in topic. For instance, Dr. David Burns’ Ten Days to Self-Esteem is really fantastic, as is The Body Image Workbook: An Eight-Step Program for Learning to Like Your Looks. NEVER GOOD ENOUGH: How to use Perfectionism to Your Advantage Without Letting it Ruin Your Life is also the best book I’ve read about how to set aside perfectionist tendencies.More recently, I’ve also read some books that use mindfulness practices more, and would highly recommend The Mindful Way Workbook: An 8-Week Program to Free Yourself from Depression and Emotional Distress (which isn’t just for depression, but is also useful for stress) and Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself.Overall, this is a useful book that provides a good overview of ways to enhance your self-image. It’s nice to have so many ideas laid out in one place, and if you want just one book that covers a broad range of topics, this book will be useful. However, if you want more in-depth focus on specific areas of self-esteem, I would instead pick up one of the books I mentioned above.

Title: Excellent Guide Whether You Suffer From Low Self Esteem Or Want To Nurture Your Children or Others To Improve Their Self Esteem
Review: Self esteem is a complex issue, but this book presents material on the subject in practical and simplistic manner. Self Esteem for Dummies is essentially a nice guide to help you identify your own self esteem issues and take steps to improve your self esteem. As I learned from the book, everyone – even people with relatively high self esteem – has at least some self esteem issue, some people obviously with more issues than others. I think before reading the guide I (wrongly) categorized people as having either low self esteem or high self esteem, but the guide focused me on the fact that everyone has some self esteem issue or issues (how many otherwise confident successful women still say “I’m too fat!” and feel bummed gaining a few pounds?).Some even have such high self esteem that it results in negative behavior toward others. The guide even covers perfectionism. My point is that the guide covers a large variety of self esteem issues, and I think most people can relate to at least some of what is presented. Even if you are not the one with low self esteem, chances are a loved one, a friend or colleague suffers from it, and this guide can make you more cognizant of the behavior and give you insight as to how to communicate better and be atuned to how your own behavior impacts others. The guide devotes a whole section to nurturing the self esteem of others, so it’s a great read for anyone who has children since many self esteem issues do stem back to childhood treatment by parents. The guide discusses where self esteem comes from, provides exercises for determining where self esteem is lacking and concrete information about setting goals and using various techniques for improving self esteem, such as visualization and affirmation, and how to increase your confidence through your own self awareness. It suggests ways to talk to others and how to deal with negative “self talk.” It discusses finding how to like yourself and work on barriers in your job or with loved ones. It lets people know they aren’t alone and should request and seek help. It covers how to nurture others and help teens and children build self esteem. Some of it seems so obvious, yet reading it reinforces what we know is right but forget in our busy world sometimes- that listening attentively to your children lets them know how important they are. There are lots of wise tidbits, such as staying positive even with a difficult teen and remembering to breath. The guide covers so much, too much to list here.Suffice it to say, I love the simplistic layout of the guide, which is loaded with positive information and practical tips and exercises to actually help someone achieve his or her goals for improving self esteem for a healthier, happier and more rewarding personal and work life, and ways to nurture your children so they grow up to be healthy, happy responsible adults. It’s an excellent, well written guide that I think packs more helpful and understandable information into one book than most people with self esteem issues could get from ongoing therapy. (I’m not suggesting that’s the case for everyone or that every person’s needs can be met by this guide.) One just needs to sit down, read it and take it in and do some of the exercises and find what works as there are lots of practical suggestions in this guide provided in a clear methodical manner, such as finding something you really enjoy and becoming proficient at it. Good advice and one of many important and practical suggestions in the guide that can help improve self esteem.

Review: This book goes beyond the Cognitive Therapy approach or the “just love yourself” one of many self-esteem books. This book includes a series of exercises that allow you to find actual proof of your worth as a person. Why do we need proof? well, low or inexistent self-esteem develops from a sense of worthlessness seeded in early life and reinforced along the way. By finding worth in us, even the smallest hint of it, we can fight back the old sense of worthlessness. It really helped me and it was an amazing “aha!” moment when despite all my mistakes in life I could see the worth of my existence. All is going uphill from there. If you buy this book, you wont regret it. But i have to warn you: you must complete the exercises and be ready to face the bad or painful memories. The good news? you are going to find the light in the dark and you will really understand the meaning of this phrase 🙂
