Title: It’s okay – very nice components
Review: Okay so i’ll preface with my family plays a TON of games a year and so we come at this with some experience playing a bunch of different games and some of similar ilk to this. It’s okay. At first, during unboxing, I was blown away by the components as they are all super nice and the wooden bits just make a game have that premium feel. It’s one that will give you nice happy feelings upon opening it.When it comes to gameplay, it’s just….okay. I’m not going to say it’s bad or terrible, but there isn’t much to write home about. The rules are pretty straightforward and it plays fairly quickly, but there just isn’t too much interest that really makes this one we want to come back to. It also takes up a ton of shelf space for what it is (which is where the premium components (cause larger and take up more space), almost hurt it. It’s hard to justify such a big box for the experience it gives.That all being said, I do think many will enjoy this and I don’t want to make it seem like this is a terrible game no one should play. I think it’ll have its fans and people who want something pretty simple but more complex than what they may be used to off the target shelf might enjoy this. I think it just doesn’t do much that already hasn’t been done so it’s kind of just a pretty face on something that’s been around.If the theme and look peaks your interest and you find it at a good price, might be worth a look! I always recommend checking boardgamegeek.com for all the info and more you could want on any board game that exists!

Title: Fun enough, capitalism but with flowers
Review: This is an interesting one, and kind of place where I bet the pun of the name came first and then the game followed. For something that probably has an origin like that, it’s pretty well done.Box is nice, pieces are nice, components are nice. All the art is well done. Game is quick enough, simple enough, and fun enough, if you can get past the sort of nesting the concept has in capitalism. But, you know, isn’t that everything?Good unique game to have around.

Title: An entertaining and pretty game for families and parties
Review: This was a good family game for us. When we have a large gathering with aunts and uncles and cousins, there’s a range of interest in board games. Some of us are pretty serious board game players, but others are quite casual. Stalk Exchange is easy enough that the infrequent gamers can pick it up but interesting enough that it won’t lose the attention of more experienced players. So that is what I would keep in mind for this one; it’s not the most challenging or complex game, and it probably won’t rank at the top of your list, but it’s a solid game with a relatively low entry point for families to play together.I will also give the game major props for visual design – it looks fantastic, with beautiful pieces and a fun board layout. That’s part of what keeps our more casual players invested; they like how pretty the garden looks as it’s growing and all the flowers are laid out on display.

Title: It’s okay
Review: I always admire the effort that goes into modern board games – I know by the time they hit the shelves, a lot of work and play testing has gone into them. That is why I hate to be critical of them, but in this case I can’t deny that I just did not really like this game. Didn’t hate it, just have no desire to keep playing it.Unfortunately, I have a couple of component criticisms to start. The game comes with two drawstring bags, which are of excellent quality. Unfortunately, one of them (the “Greenhouse” bag) is just too small. The game comes with 125 gorgeous double-sided wooden flower tokens, ALL of which, at the beginning of the game, are supposed to fit into this bag. Each player draws a certain number of tokens randomly from the bag to form a “stalk portfolio” – but because the bag is so small, it is not possible to reach *into* the bag, you can only draw from the tokens on top, which are visible. So to truly draw randomly, you need to mix all the tokens BEFORE putting them in the bag (since they cannot move around once in the bag), and not look at the bag while drawing from it, as you can clearly see what tokens lie on top. Why couldn’t there just have been a larger bag, that one could reach into with your hand, to draw randomly, as is done in every other game of this nature (The Quacks of Quedlinburg comes to mind)?Also, the two boards in this game are, in my opinion, printed too dark. I don’t understand, especially in a garden game, why the board was not printed in vibrant colors. I tried to accurately depict this in a photo, but given my phone’s tendency to auto-adjust photos, this was hard to do. Maybe the designers thought the other components would “pop” by sitting on a darker board… or maybe the printing went forward without a proper review of color proofs. Either way, like the bag issue, this is something I would hope could be addressed should there ever be a reprint. The art itself I should note is fantastic, and there is a statement from the artist in the rulebook, which I think should be a feature in other games.Now on to the gameplay. In Stalk Exchange, you are trying to advance the value of certain flowers via the game boards, while also holding them in your secret stash, hidden behind a little “garden shed” kept in front of you. Value is increased by “harvesting” flowers – surrounding certain tokens placed into a “garden” with other tokens, allowing them to be removed to the “Market Board.” (It’s a little counterintuitive that the flowers that are harvested the most increase their value the most.)There is a tricky dynamic where the most valuable flower at the game end “crashes” and reduces its value in half. This does not necessarily mean that a player who has heavily invested in this flower will lose the game, as it can be the case that, even cut in half, the (previously) most valuable flower can still be worth a lot.My problem with how the game plays is that everything feels like it is only building up to the game end and final scoring, with nothing really fun or exciting happening along the way. There are no other goals, and no events that occur. Just the basic gameplay, which is rather simple, a sort of 5-way tug of war between 5 stocks/stalks/flowers.If I want to play a stock market type, game, I’ll go with another, like my fave, Raccoon Tycoon. But if you love flowers, and just want a game with some simple rules, this may be for you.

Title: What a great match
Review: We got this game because of the flowers and how beautiful it looks. I knew I would love playing this game, but was resigned to the fact that it would just be a game for my flower loving friends, but I was wrong. Once I convinced my husband to play one game with me he was hooked.The strategy and planning against the market is a challenge and the method of how the game grows a stocks value is brilliant.Components are beautiful and well made. The design of the game is wonderful and so clever how the art in the game is used for setup and game play,Great family game. Kids will love planting the flowers and making them blossom, while the more mature players will understand the rise and fall of their stocks as they make their next move.Definitely a great addition to the game closet.
