Design a truly unique vacation with 100 intriguing alternatives to more predictable, expensive, and overcrowded destinations.

Let’s face it. These days, many of the world’s most beloved places have become expensive and overcrowded, making their celebrated allure that much harder to enjoy. But fear not: Here Not There helps you create a more robust, off-the-beaten path vacation by revealing 100 alternative destinations to the standard travel playbook—as well as expert tips on when to visit, where to eat, what to see, and where to stay.

In this surprising collection of lively travel itineraries, you’ll find authentic, unexpected, and rewarding destinations of a lifetime to add to your bucket list, including:
A trip to Quito, Ecuador, instead of Lima, Peru, for iconic architecture and top-notch South American cuisine. A road trip along West Virginia’s byways instead of New England’s highways for brilliant autumn colors. A romantic rendezvous to Lecce, Italy, instead of mega-touristed Florence for art, wine, and artifacts.A hiking excursion in Chile’s Lake District instead of England’s for an unexpected natural wonder.A theater-infused visit to Cleveland, Ohio, where the performances match the levels of New York City’s Broadway.A tour of Portugal’s Azores, rather than the Hawaiian islands, for flora, fauna, and underwater adventures.A water-filled excursion through New York’s Thousand Islands instead of a cruise down Germany’s Rhine River.A trip to Detroit to find Art Deco skyscrapers (and even a beach in Motown) that rival those of Miami.
Both surprising and inspiring, Here Not There offers readers a chance to think beyond our typical borders and discover undreamed-of destinations.

Title: This book is a STANDOUT among other travel books!
Review: For starters, Andew is an exceptional writer. I have followed his work with National Geographic Traveler and the Wall Street Journal for years and couldn’t wait to get my hands on his first travel book. The stunning photos and well-written descriptions do two things: Spark travel dreams for more exotic locales, and Provide approachable destinations one can plan immediately. I love to travel, but am less excited about crowds or beaten paths that have taken a beating. Andrew’s suggestions have put me in the know, and now I want to go! The chapter headings make it easy to navigate and fun to explore, with some of my favorites being “Unconventional Parks,” “Weekend Alternatives,” and “Big-Name Surprises.”I recently moved back to my childhood home of San Diego and in addition to learning about parts of the city I’ve never been to, I am already planning trips to Santa Barbara (instead of the French Riviera) and California’s Central Coast (instead of Tuscany). And he’s piqued my interest about exploring Luang Prabang, Laos instead of Sedona, AZ!I’ll be referencing this book for future travel for years to come.

Title: Great travel resource
Review: My husband and I love to travel. We also love to find the “undiscovered” gems. “Here Not There” provides a comprehensive resource to lead us down our path of discovery and away from the increasingly maddening crowds. Many suggestions are counterintuitive. Author Andrew Nelson provides thorough descriptions of the “why” behind the suggestions. We have already incorporated Nelson’s suggestions to visit Howe Sound BC into our fall travel plans. It is a beautiful book with gorgeous photographs and an engaging, conversational tone. Title: Great for adventurers
Review: This book is a gem – offering unique (but accessible) destinations and great visuals. Originally purchased for myself, I was so impressed by its insights that I’ll be buying more copies as gifts. During my recent trip through Texas, the recommendation to take Hwy 90 proved terrific. Online suggestions were hit or miss for me on this trip but, this guide was spot on for my tastes. Highly recommend!

Title: fantastic resource for off the beaten track vacation destinations
Review: My copy of “Here Not There” has already become a great new source of inspiration for new travel destinations in both the US, where it excels and of course, overseas. Lecce, Italy, seems the perfect dupe for Florence while Manchester England appears to be a fascinating city to explore the next time I’m in the UK. From California to Laos there’s a here for any there you can think of. Bravo Andrew Nelson and National Geographic for sparking my imagination of what’s out there waiting to be discovered!
