Title: One of the best purchases for homeschool
Review: I have been using this book during homeschool English classes with my kids, ages 9 (high IQ), 11, and 15. It has been a huge hit! My kids say it is their favorite part of the day. They read the excerpts aloud and discuss diction, detail, etc. and they come up with their own re-writes. We then sometimes stop and read more about the authors or the contexts—watch videos on the subjects presented, etc. This book really gets their analytical and creative juices flowing. It prompts their curiosity. What a wonderful find! I’m so glad I bought this book!

Title: Great activities to use with kids!
Review: This is fabulous for any upper grade ELA high school teacher – an advanced 10 to seniors. Probably even great in college if these are elements the subject teaches. Dean includes a suggested answer for each question. Each question is of a higher order, open ended, and challenging question. It takes short excerpts from classic literature or poetry and analyzes it according to the device: diction, detail, imagery, syntax, tone, punctuation, meaning, creation or implication of meaning… it hits it all with 2-3 questions students can answer in a DIN and review with a little mini-lesson. Definitely worth the money! Aligns with common core and just plain good analytical understandings!

Title: Just What I Needed
Review: I haven’t taught Creative Writing for years, but a colleague’s mat. leave meant I was assigned the course. I bought Voice Lessons over the summer, and I’m finding it’s extremely useful. In taking 15 minutes on one of the exercises per class following a 10 minute free-write on a given prompt, I find that the class has structure, and more importantly, the students are working together to consider diction, detail, imagery, syntax and tone–concepts that have never consciously occured to many of them, but must be considerations of anyone who sees writing as an art form. I really like the breadth of the choice of text selections which range from the classic to the contemporary. Discovering Voice Lessons has made teaching this class much easier for me, and made the class a much richer learning experience for the students. Voice Lessons was just what I needed.

Title: Challenging exercises for the High School Classroom
Review: Few things are more challenging than the teaching of “tone”. Telling a student that tone is equivalent to the vocal quality of the speaker’s delivery can be misleading-what if the student can’t easily interpret the speaker’s intention? Thankfully, Ms. Dean’s examples aid in clearing up the confusion and getting to the heart of the matter. Her exercises lend themselves to small group discussions/debates. What could be better?Alternatively, the exercises can be employed as “warmups”, wherein the whole class can discuss an exercise, followed by a second exercise for an individual. These classroom activities were designed by a veteran teacher, perhaps why I believe they are best utilized in either upper-level or honors classes. They will not easily yield their best to a casual reader. Over time, this leads to superior results in the reading and writing skills at the heart of the communication arts.

Title: Every English or Writing Teacher Needs This Book
Review: I sent the link for this book to my English department. It’s that good. The lessons/exercises use great lines from literature and each exercise asks students and writers to consider–really consider–their choices. Right now I’m using the exercises on Diction and they make teaching so easy. We’ve had great discussions come out of the questions. Also, I teach on a U.S. Army base in Germany and when we did the exercise that uses the word antidote it includes a question about replacing the word antidote with the word gift, which happens to be poison in German. What a discovery! Again, buy the book if you teach English or writing. Note, the answer keys in the back contain answers for the excercises but it would be nice to have suggested answers for the Apply questions.

Title: Great Resource
Review: Great for bell-ringer/start up activity. I use this book all the time. It models good writing from contemporary and classic literature, provides examples and opportunity for discussion and critical thinking, as well as providing students the opportunity to then sharpen their own writing. It is designed for whole class, partner, small group, and individual learning. Very adaptable to however a teacher chooses to use it.
