Title: Easy to position, nice and bright, water resistant, cozy light color
Review: I was concerned when we ordered these that they might not be strong enough to light up the 5 ft wide by 1 foot deep steps leading to the pool patio. I was also concerned that their location, close to the wall, only sees direct sunlight for a few hours a day in the early spring leading to insufficient charging. I am happy to report that all my fears were unfounded: they are definitely strong enough, with two lights completely illuminating the large slabs, and surprised me with their battery life. These lights stayed burning through an entire 10 hours of darkness from the very first night (we are in the Southern US, which matters some for solar products–they typically work way better down here than they do up north thanks to more direct and frequent sunlight). My install location is partially obscured from sunlight for parts of the day, but they get at least 6 hours of direct sunlight, which seems to be enough. They are inexpensive, but you might be tempted to buy even cheaper lights due to prices and quantities. Make sure to pay attention to the number of LEDs if you do. Some of them are not good deals due to scaled back brightness, which usually also means a smaller battery. The lenses of these as well as the solar sensors are covered with glossy acrylic, making it more difficult for pollen to stick to them. They came with plenty of stickers to hold them in place. I have low expectations for the stickies and plan to use a hook-and-loop attachment (all-weather) for long-term as I don’t think these will like it very much if I power wash my steps with them permanently attached. The item listing currently mentions attaching them with “included screws.” There were no screws in the box, nor is there a screwable spot that wouldn’t risk wrecking them or at least screwing up their water resistance, but they did include a generous supply of stickies (more than a dozen for just 2 lights, so many I thought they were packing material at first). The batteries in these are not replaceable because they are in a waterproof shell, so when the batteries exceed their max number of charge/discharge cycles after 5 years or so, they will need to be replaced. Note that these need to be stuck

Title: Functional, But With Poor Mounting Options.
Review: Packaging is average; a box of four comes with 2 pairs off lights with each pair wrapped in a bubble wrap bag. Also included were 13 little strips of double sided tape 1-1/2″ long.Appearance is average, they don’t look or feel super cheap but nothing about them screams “quality” either.Installation is super easy, turn the switch on and sit them on your steps. Yeah, that’s it. The only available permanent mounting option is double sided tape. On wood steps against wood stringers or risers. Outside in the rain. Good luck with that. A good wind will probably blow them right off my steps.Functionality is, from what I can tell, good. They have a fairly large solar panel for charging and a surprisingly good claimed battery capacity of 600mAh. The light they produce is not really the warm white they claim, but it’s also not the horrible blue white light people tend to associate with LED, and is bright enough to light up the step on which you place it.Good overall, but the lack of reliable, long term mounting options is a big drawback.

Title: Waterproof rating is good but the battery can’t be replaced & you can’t screw these lights into wood
Review: I ordered this $23 bstot set of four step lights (Amazon ASIN B0DTKPMBZX) because I have a bunch of wooden and concrete steps which face south and which I’d rather they be lit up using solar energy instead of by the electrical power that is wired to each step. The first thing I realized when these step lights arrived is that they do not have screw holes in the top plate (like some other step lights have) for screw attachments, which meant that they are likely going to end up on the concrete steps where I wasn’t going to be drilling holes anyway.I weighed these step lights at about 82 grams each on my kitchen scale (about 2-7/8ths ounces) which is very light. Since they’re so light, it’s nice that these step lights came with 14 small 2-1/2 inch by 5/8ths inch double-sided foam tape rectangles (for sticking them into place, although they stayed in place for a week of wind and rain, so just placing them in a corner will keep them there, for the most part (as long as the corner is protected from wind).Speaking of where the corner is, it goes without saying that you can only use these step lights on south-facing steps, although they will charge their battery in a few hours with the 5V 140mA solar panel if they get enough tangential sunlight without shade during the day. With respect to attachments, these step lights have an on/off switch on the part that will be covered once attached to the steps. So you have to turn it on, and leave it that way, if you’re going to attach them to the steps. I’m not sure why that switch is even there, but I guess it’s for long-term storage so that you can shut them off so that they don’t discharge too deeply (which will damage the battery).Speaking of the battery, there’s no way to replace it, so when these lights wear out due to charge/discharge cycles, that’s it. It’s time to recycle them. Some of these style of steplights have replaceable batteries, but in some of those, they’re not really replaceable, because they have soldered connections, but others are AA batteries which ARE easily replaced by the user. But I bet nobody does that, and anyway, the IP rating would probably be damaged by opening and replacing the battery since the waterproofing silicone would be damaged. The Amazon listing claims 18 surface mount device (SMD) LEDs, where I counted fifteen 1mm squares and three larger squares with magnifying lenses over them. The Amazon listing claims an IP67 ingress protection rating, but I didn’t see any corroborating information on the box or package insert. If it’s IP67, then it’s dustproof for the most part, and it can handle water submersion for short periods of time, which will happen to these lights in the rainstorms. As for the color, personally I prefer the whitest white and not so much the warm white, but it’s still light on the steps either way. Given the concrete is rough, I like that these step lights have a cut apex so that the uneven edges won’t prevent it from sitting flush against the side and bottom walls of the concrete steps. In explaining all of this, I hope this review helps you make a more informed decision.
