#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Don’t miss the hit streaming series Reacher!
A string of mysterious deaths. A long-classified mission. A young MP with nothing to lose.
1992. All across the United States respectable, upstanding citizens are showing up dead. These deaths could be accidents, and they don’t appear to be connected—until a fatal fall from a high-floor window attracts some unexpected attention.
That attention comes from the secretary of defense. All of a sudden he wants an interagency task force to investigate. And he wants Jack Reacher as the army’s representative. If Reacher gets a result, great. If not, he’s a convenient fall guy.
But office politics isn’t Reacher’s thing. Three questions quickly emerge: Who’s with him, who’s against him, and will the justice he dispenses be the official kind . . . or his own kind?

Title: Jack Reacher, Back in D.C.
Review: Really good plot but it takes too long to explain what is going on. The reader is in the dark for a number of chapters without knowing who or what is really happening. Other than that, I have no complaints. It is one of the better Reacher novels out of the past few.For my taste there was too much choreography of the fights Reacher had. I didn’t need to read who stepped which way and when. And that went on for several paragraphs by the way. But other than that great story.

Title: Enjoyable but not thrilling.
Review: “The Secret” is a fast, entertaining read, but not the “gripping thriller” its promotional materials promise. It’s 1992 and Reacher is a Captain in the MPs, having just been busted down from Major. Now, he’s assigned to a task force formed by the Secretary of Defense to solve the whys and wherefores of a string of murders of scientists scattered across the country. Reacher and his fellow agents from the CIA, the FBI, and the Treasury must race against time to stop the perpetrators from killing again, if they can. This tale of adventure and intrigue has its good and not-so-good points. As to the good, it’s well and clearly written, fairly fast-paced, and contains some interesting information, especially about tradecraft. While the plot is a little disjointed (especially considering the first quarter has Reacher investigating a crime that has nothing to do with the rest of the story), for the most part, it held my attention. And it was fun to revisit the technology of the early 1990s when we all relied on faxes, corded telephones, and newspapers to get our information. Also, for those who enjoy Reacher’s pugilism, there are a number of well-described fight scenes. As to the not-so-good, the characters weren’t as interesting as they could have been. This was especially true of Reacher. Because this takes place in 1992, when Reacher’s still an MP, before developing his legendary “hitchhiker-with-a-toothbrush” persona, I’d hoped to learn how and why he became that man. But it seems the authors chose simply to take the character they’ve developed over the last 27 novels and transplant him back to 1992. As for the rest of the characters, they seemed stock and without depth. The villains are heinous. The “good guys” are kind of mundane, even if each does have a flaw to wrestle with. But there’s little exploration of what makes anyone tick. So, it was a challenge to root for or identify with anyone. In addition, I thought the mysteries’ solutions were revealed much too early and that other aspects were very predictable. 75% of the way through, I felt like I had the novel figured out. Nothing after that surprised me (not that anything in the first 75% was all that surprising, either). All in all, the lack of compelling characters and the dearth of surprises combined to make this novel far less gripping or thrilling than it might have been. Still, I found it entertaining enough to give it three stars.

Title: A hidden government program bubbles up as scientist start to die
Review: I look forward to this time of year because Lee Child usually releases another Jack Reacher book. Sure, there are other things. Holidays, family, cold weather. Screw the latter. After 23 years in Alaska, I’ve done my time being cold. Still, reading Reacher warms my heart, if that’s even possible. “The Secret” takes Reacher back into his past. He’s been dropped to captain for something he did to a suspect that Child refers to as warranted but not according to superiors. Reacher works for the Army. He’s not yet that wandering hero. He’s assigned to a team looking to limit fallout on a group of scientists who worked on a top secret project 20 years earlier and are starting to disappear. The group is given very little to go on, but Reacher and his teammates, one each from Treasury, the CIA and FBI start to find clues. Few at first, but with a little cajoling details begin to emerge. It’s classic Child. He assembles pieces for the reader, but the outcome is hardly assured. In fact, it was right until the end that the full picture of what was going on became clear. Definitely worth the investment. I read it over Thanksgiving.

Title: Good, but
Review: It’s Reacher, so it’s good, but not one of the best. I kept wondering why scientists kept getting killed when they were being watched by government agents.

Title: A Great Reacher Story!
Review: It always amaze me how creative Lee Child, and now Andrew Child can be with Jack Reacher! Very creative on going back into Reader’s pass to pull out a case for a story. Very impressive with the creativity of using landmark areas I am fairly familiar with. The Rock Island weapon issue to the the Joliet Armory. However the impression piece of story is the logical steps or deductions that led him to the actual murder or culprit behind everything. Great story, one of the best!
