Title: Fine Art Photography: Tony Sweet
Review: I looked at some of his pictures & wanted to learn how to do this with my camera. He tells where pictures were taken, with what camera, lenses, settings and what programs he used. I’m in love with the man’s photography style. The book has biven me incentive to try learning what to do to with my camera. Amazed at what I’ve been able to do in a short time. I’m sixty nine years old & have been tking pictures forever, now am taking pictures that I consider art. I have also bought his other books & video. All are fantastic.

Title: Examples, Not Instructions
Review: This book is not a “How to Do It” book; it is a “How I Did It” book. I expected an instructional book so I was disappointed. The format is a series of photographs, each with details about how the photographer composed and captured it. A sentence from one of the photographs reads, “The scene was actually quite cold and very blue, so I added an 81EF warming filter, which is responsible for all the coloration of the rocks and at the horizon.” There is no discussion about how filters work, which filters to use with water-based subjects, when to use them, what an 81EF filter is or why the artist chose it over other warming filters. There is no explanation; there are just technical details about how the artist/author created specific photographs that happened to have water-based subjects. On the plus side, the pictures are beautiful and well worth the price by themselves, which is why I am keeping the book. I should also say that a very experienced amateur or a professional photographer could probably glean quite a bit of information from the descriptions and might find the book both useful and interesting. Just be aware that this is not the correct book if you want to learn some organized principles for working with liquid and light.Six stars for the art and information minus two stars for implying that the book teaches photographic techniques = 4 stars.

Title: Little bang for the buck
Review: This is just a collection of individual images with information on each. There is no overall approach to different situations discussed.

Title: review water,ice,fog
Review: This and his accompaying books in the series are superb. He not only provides an explanation of the technique he employed to create the image, but often also explains the composition or artistic “merit” of the photo. This particular book helps you transcend from mere “photo realism” or “documentary” photography, to the “abstract” where you can look even at the mundane with a new perspective, a new vision and a new appreciation. The world becomes more “fun” and perhaps more emotionally evoking. While most of the photos were created with film (vs. digital) the instruction is such that translation to the digital world is straightforward, and effective. As you read the text and study the photos, Mr Sweet encourages you to think of why, when and how you would apply the techniques to your own photography. I know that my own skills “jumped” a level after even the firstreading of this book.

Title: Bought this for my brother…
Review: Purchased this for by brother (a very serious photographer). The book details exactly how Tony Sweet captures for very nice water, ice and fog images. Not only a great instructional book, but a quite impressive “inspiration” to take some very nice photos that you might not think about.

Title: An expensive book!
Review: I’m sorry for this lame title, but in a way it’s true. The pictures in this book were very inspirational to me, and now I’m saving money to get a Nikon 105mm macro lens! You will not get technical descriptions on how to achieve the shots, and in many cases the description could have been avoided, but the pictures are so strong they speak for themselves. After having read this book I will buy the other books in this “Fine art photography” series.

Review: I bought this blind as a joint Christmas present for me and my husband. I’m an amateur photographer (I feel lucky when I can get my camera to cooperate), but I LOVE taking pictures of water so this sounded like something I’d enjoy. The great thing about this book (other than the gorgeous photos) is that he tells us what camera and lenses he uses and how he came to take each shot. The book has really made me think about taking pictures in a new way and has helped me understand why (without the proper camera-lens) I will not be able to capture certain shots no matter how long I stand there, no matter if the light is perfect. His photographs have also given me new ideas and the last time I went out I was able to capture some lovely shots I would otherwise have walked past if I hadn’t read his book.

Review: I would get a refund if i could. This is a typical photography book from the 80’s and 90’s. Technically useless. The tastes changed a lot since then. The price i paid for it is outrageous.Maybe 5 pics i liked in the whole book. Not even a coffee table book.
