Title: Was a child’s smart gift of choice.
Review: I was not familiar with this series but a child at a local school asked for a “who was” or “what was” book as part of a Christmas child in need project at a local elementary school. The fact that a child wanted one of these books, something to read and learn from, impressed me, as did the content and engaging illustrations when I read them myself. Of course, Amazon had them and I bought a bunch for this youngster whom I wish I could hug and thank for likely growing up to make the world a smarter and better place.

Review: Very educational, great read. Our 9-year old reader knows a few things about American history, mostly facts about some of the high-profile presidents and the US roles in the world wars. However, having seen some movies, the frontier and iIndian culture does interest her as well. So I thought this was a good introduction for her to the pioneer-life.We used this book for guided reading and both enjoyed the book. The font size is large and the choice of words makes it suitable for younger readers as well. Also because the storyline is clear and very straightforward. Though with 100 pages of text it is an extensive read with a fair amount of information and it touches on some more mature concepts such as the Texas republic and the homestead act. In that sense I really appreciate the single or double paged sub-topics throughout these books that explain more about a related event or specific person. In this book such highlighted topics are among others Andrew Jackson, Tribes of the Tennessee, the flags of Texas. All quite interesting really, as a parent I learned quite few things. In terms of presentation, the soft bound book’s cover is colourful. There are quite a few illustrations, but these are in black and white. The quality of these illustrations differs per book, the ones in this Davy Crockett book are attractive and by proper artist . So this is my only drawback, for a children’s book in this age when there is advanced printing and publishing tools around, it looks a bit out-dated. Which is a shame given the appealing content and storyline. There are maps of and a time line as well.To conclude, given the modest price vs the content and the educational value this is a highly recommended.
