Title: More is a Good Thing
Review: Shadow of Xitle is a small expansion to the base game, Teotihuacan. This expansion comes with 10 new technology tiles and 10 new starting tiles. This is an expansion that can be added easily to the base game, and also to the Late Preclassical Period expansion.The technology tiles add to certain play styles, especially play styles that are not often sought after. An example of this is gaining 2 victory points every time a mask tile is taken. This makes obtaining mask tiles even more viable, and it works retroactively if masks were obtained at the start of the game. Another technology that would change the way players play is the tile that allows a player to exchange up to four resources of the same type into another same amount of goods. Which this occurs every time a worker is moved onto or past the Palace space. This brings the amount of technologies that can possibly be chosen for the base game to 19 instead of the 9 that are in the base game. What is also nice, as mentioned before, is the Late Preclassical Period is also included as the orange temple images can be found on technology tiles and starting tiles.The Starting Tiles give more variety in the type of starting actions a player may accomplish. The first is advancing on the pyramid track, Orange Temple, and any two different temple tracks. The other items are gaining a player’s fourth worker, selecting the highest technology tile to begin with, and begin the game with two workers taking Worship actions. The player does not need to play cocoa to take the ability and claim the discovery for Worship. The only issue is the player will begin the game with two locked workers. These additional tiles brings the starting tiles from the base game from 18 to 28. This means that there would be three genuinely unique starting tiles, twelve dedicated to advancing on temples, four for technologies, three for food and supplies, two for discovery tiles, two for pyramid track, and two for advancing on the avenue of the dead track.Shadow of Xitle is just more variety for the base game and its expansion. Technology tiles add a great amount of variety as to how a game is setup, then add the additional starting tiles, then no game will ever feel the same. This is not even including the variety the base game and expansion add. Granted it is not absolutely needed, but it is an easy addition to anyone’s game, and would even recommend it for those that are just purchasing the base game.
