Title: Outstanding Book
Review: Being new to soap making I purchased three (3) books, Milk Soapmaking by Anne L. Watson, Soap Crafting By Anne-Marie Faiola, The Soap Queen and Basic Soap Making edited by Letcavage. I have reviewed the three and find that each of them has good information to offer. If you are looking for an easy to follow soap making book that is great for a beginner like myself I would recommend both Basic Soap Making –Letcavage and Soap Crafting by The Soap Queen as they have easy to follow instructions as well as pictures to follow along. The Basic Soap making book offers more explanation on types of oils and smells to showing you some common items that can be used to make soap. The Soap Crafting book provides easy to follow recipes as well as easy to follow instruction and explanations. I love not only the MANY recipes in this book but also the explanation on techniques used to get different designs in soap. In my opinion, these books complement each other very well or could be purchased separately. The Milk Soapmaking book is perfect for milk soap recipes as well as explanations; it is a straight read only book so if you’re looking for a picture explanation you will not get it. She does an excellent job of describing what texture you should look for however, if you like an example this book may be best as an accompaniment to one or both of the other books and not as a sole source.

Title: This Book Is the One You Want!
Review: I have looked at several soapmaking books and they all seem to be the same bland wordy thing. This book is hands-down the best one I’ve read. It has beautiful and clear step by step photography, not random sketchy illustrations. It has complete recipes and techniques for making a number of gorgeous and varied soaps, and a plethera of facts, tips, and information you can clearly see and easily find. If you want to complete your soap making reference experience, I also highly recommend Anne-Marie’s DVD “Learn to Make Cold Process Soap”. She clearly provides information about equipment, safety, and the best part – making soap in a way that is easy to understand, and eases the worry factor of working with the ingredients. Wonderful – thanks Anne-Marie!

Title: Now I understand !!
Review: I became interested in making soap and attended 2 soaping seminars. Even then I could not understand the “mystery” of making soap. I purchased this book because Anne Marie Faiola was one of the speakers at the first seminar I attended. She was delightful and very friendly. This book explains in detail the different ingredients and the reasons for using them. It has detailed photos showing from start to finish each step in making soap. She explains the differences in oils the SAP value of each. There is also a chapter on safety, you are using LYE which is a dangerous chemical, which I found very helpful. I have not tried all the recipes but have found the book to be of great value because of it’s detail and explanations. She presented soap making on a level I could understand. Yes she does own Bramble Berry, good for her, but I did not find that she pushed her products or company.

Title: Instructional, inspirational, and intimidating
Review: When I purchased this book, I didn’t know enough about soap making to even know about the different methods. As the subtitle says, this book is strictly about the cold-process method. It has clear recipes and instructions for making many bars. I consider most of the recipes and designs more appropriate for someone who has some experience with cold-process soap making, and the author suggests making a simple, plain “beginner” soap (instructions included) before trying the others. The recipes make up Part 2. Part 1 is a thorough how-to and description of general techniques and components of the cold-process method. Reading Part 1 made me realize that cold-process soap making is not a casual hobby. Even if the author hadn’t stressed it, I quickly realized I wouldn’t be using this method to make soap around kids or pets. The equipment is not specialized (I already have most of the required pieces in my kitchen), but I wouldn’t choose to use the same measuring and mixing utensils for soap and food (something she says is do-able except for the container used for the lye-water preparation). Her designs are fantastic, and the many pictures provide plenty of motivation to attempt some of the more advanced ones. Faiola repeats important safety tips in each recipe, something I, as a beginner, appreciate. (Add the lye to the water, never the other way around!)I learned a lot from this book. I will say that, after reading it, I’m more inclined to try one of the other methods, for example, rebatch or melt-and-pour. I find the cold-process method a little intimidating!

Title: Great beginner book
Review: Judging a book by its cover, I love hardcover books because it maintains its new look longer. This particular book is also spiral bound; it allows you to leave the page open flat on a table while you look at the recipes. In terms of the content, this book really helped me to understand the overall soap making hobby. The author jumps right into a simple recipe before going into overwhelming details. The book also generally outlines commonly used oils, fragrances, and colors that allows you to get creative early on in your soap making adventure. The only thing I found was that the SAP values in the book are a little on the conservative side (meaning the SAP values are in general on the lower end of published ranges). Some of the recipes are difficult for beginners, but I feel they would become more useful later (I’m not there yet). I really appreciated that the recipes were well described. Some of the little “tricks of the trade” are described to maximize your success.I now have many books in my library, but this is one of the three that I refer back to most often.
