Title: Creative Destruction And The Farmer Caught In The Middle
Review: I am inclined to blast away at the suspected anti-capitalist bias of the film’s originators. This, however, would not be entirely fair of me. This film superbly depicts the crisis many families are forced to endure when caught within the gears of economic “creative destruction.” It is therefore morally imperative that we do not turn our head away from this tough to handle subject matter. This beautiful film reminds us that real people often suffer the consequences of our abstract principles. Does this alone invalidate these principles? No, but we should always be cognizant of the flesh and blood dimensions of our decisions. Mel Gibson gives a powerful performance as a proud man who is losing the battle to save the family farm. The wife played by Sissy Spacek desires to be loyal to her husband while still remaining pragmatic on how best to stabilize the family’s rapidly deteriorating financial situation.Scott Glenn plays the real hero in this movie. His character is a fair and honorable business man who warns the farmer of impending doom. The river according to all reasonable expectations will eventually destroy the farm. Even the farmer grudgingly concedes this possibility. The Glenn character offers the farmer a way out, but the farmer is bull headed and places his love for the agrarian way of life over common sense. Is Gibson’s character idealistic and worthy of praise, or merely stubborn and selfish? Each person viewing “The River” will have to decide this for themselves. The great economist, Joseph Schumpeter, originated the paradoxical term “creative destruction.” Throughout history, there are always winners and losers whenever new technology replaces the older methods of earning a living. Tractors, for instance, destroyed the relevancy of horses and ploughs. This more efficient manner of tilling the soil dramatically brought down the cost of growing food. The result is that the typical consumer today spends comparatively little for vegetables at the grocery store. Unfortunately, a severe price has to be paid by those farmers who lack the ability to adjust to these improvements. At the beginning of the previous century, roughly half of the American population earned its income through farming. In the year 2000 the number has dropped to about 3%! An educated guess is that a further drop off will inevitably continue to occur. What should a viable democratic society do to address this issue? Is a Laissez Faire response appropriate, a Socialist micro management of production, or something in between? A neo-conservative such as myself opts for the third choice. The viewer once again is free to arrive at their own conclusions. I strongly, though, urge everyone to view “The River” at least once every few years. It might even behoove high school teachers and university professors to consider making this film a requirement for student credit. ‘The River” is among my favorite films of all time. Please do not ignore it.

Title: “Sooner or later there’s gonna be too much rain, or too much drought, or too much corn… I can wait.”
Review: THE RIVER (1984) is the story of Midwest farmers who not only battle against ruinous drought and floodwaters, but who must contend with Joe Wade (Scott Glenn), a modern-day land baron. Wade’s enormous farm complex is too far from the river for irrigation, so he works with the local bank to force small farmers into foreclosure. Failing that, he offers to buy his neighbors out, and some accept this offer. Once all the properties are his, Wade will dam the river and create a lake where their farms once stood.Tom Garvey (Mel Gibson) and wife Mae (Sissy Spacek), who Wade was a one-time suitor of,are among the several who mightily resist his efforts to make them homeless. There are several exciting action sequences, yet even in supposed defeat, Wade’s last words seem prophetic. They are in fact the title of this review.

Title: Really wonderful drama
Review: This film made me really feel a sense of pride for the farmers. My youngest daughter and her husband are farmers in the Mississippi delta and this is what their lives are really like. The only difference is that my daughters family grows rice and beans instead of corn. Mel and Sissy’s characters fight the river the entire movie. The film did a great job of show casing the can do spirit of American farmers. I loved it. I’d say more but don’t want to give away anything to anyone that hasn’t seen it.On a side note, someone in a previous review commented that this was “like watching a 2 hour Trump rally”. As a conservative I choose to take that as a complement. This movie is a window into lives of hard working men and women who are trying to keep their families fed and housed in difficult times. I saw family and friends that really cared about each other. They were willing to go the extra mile for someone in need. That at least seems like something we should all be able to agree on.

Title: This is R not pg 13 Good movie with the exception of a view scenes and the language
Review: Amazon has the rating wrong it should be rated R not pg 13. This is a good movie except I didn’t expect lot of the foul language and inappropriate scenes. They don’t make movies like they use to this is an 80 s movie back when actors were actually talented and didn’t rely on so much digitalizing, I am little concerned about few animals but hoping none were actually harmed in this movie. But this is a really good movie with good meaning of hardworking farmers trying to save their land from corruption and could have been much better I think. But I think the unexpected scene and language is really what caused the 3 stars I wasn’t expecting all that when I saw pg 13 rating. But it is a good movie with the nostalgia of universal music when movie first begins most 80 movies were the best though. Of course there are some great new movies as well but there is just something about the 80s movies that are usually so good and this was a good movie if the language and certain scenes were left out

Review: A man and his wife struggle to save their farm during very heavy rain which causes a massive flood. A developer of land tries to ruin it for everyone else. He is buying any land he can to force all the farmers out. MG and SS star in this fabulous film showing grit and determination in every way. Another extremely moving film to watch. The direction from Mark Rydell is wonderful in every way. The two stars really do struggle against all the elements. I do mean they really struggle in torrential rain and mud. Do they succeed, will they give in. Watch to find out. A bloody good film well worth watching . I give it 100% out of 100%. My reviews are genuine and not fake. PC. 31. 10. 2020. PS Please enjoy.
