Title: New Mechanics to a great game
Review: The Wild Hunt expansion for Hellboy the board game provides players with three more scenarios to play, five new enemies, One agent and one backup agent, and additional encounter, requisition, and deck of doom cards.The scenarios provide new rules to the game that involve landslides that can prohibit the amount of characters that can be in the spot. The new Imp enemies introduce “numerous” which means that every time one Imp spawns a second is placed. This works in their favor as they are easy to beat, but can quickly become overwhelming. The deck of doom cards add new possibilities to the base games deck of doom as they can easily be added. The two Giant enemies bring new problems as they can leave destruction tiles in their wake. Also, the new boss behavior cards are thematic for the two new sets of big enemies. The expansion also comes with more case file construction system cards (there should be a “case file construction system” expansion being released in 2020, but if players already have the kickstarter addition they can easily be added to the deck).The new scenarios are great as one is easy and the other two are medium challenge ratings. The duration for each are short, medium, and long respectively. The new Hellboy agent is great as his new “AAAaaaa” attack allows him to damage as he moves, and he gains target priority when he does at least 4 damage. Also, with his new giant sword he does not downgrade dice when wielding his new weapon while being outnumbered by enemies. Alice Managhan is a great backup agent to add to the base games backup agents, she even comes with her own figurine. The introduction of outside tiles is a nice change up as it introduces the idea of exploring without needing to be adjacent to the room.The Wild Hunt expansion for Hellboy the board game is an addition to the game that gives new scenarios to play, and additional cards and enemies to use in the base game. It introduces some new concepts that make fighting enemies troubling, or super annoying when they begin to outnumber players. Not much is going to be said about the scenarios themselves, but the easy scenario is a great start as it allows players to understand how the new enemies work, and some of the new rules and surprises coming. It is great to get more cards for the Case Files Construction System, which is a great bonus to purchasing this expansion. If the players love the Hellboy base game, and want more, this should be instantly purchased.Teaching the Game: Make sure you remember that sword Imps get +2 for every other enemy that has the swarm rule. Landslides are not scenery in a sense that they can be destroyed, they hinder the amount of people that can fit in a space. Also, remember that running out of scenery tokens mean that it is unavailable (as per the rule on page 24 of the base game).
