Title: Great for sanding
Review: I purchased to prevent breathing in dust when sanding wood projects. So far works good. It is a little loose for me on the ears but the adjustable velcro strap is very helpful for getting the fit right.

Title: Very good function; must modify to ensure fit
Review: This is good mask at this time, primarily because of its high quality replaceable filters. Since most “blown” (non-woven) filter material production has recently been shunted to private medical suppliers, this mask/filter combo seems to be one of the few remaining sources of high filtration masks/filters for the public. The filter layers are designed and technically capable of very high particulate and ozone filtration percentages. However, IMHO, the design has significant limitations: First, masks with outflow valves do not provide optimal source protection. They primarily protect the wearer from other sources. That means if the wearer is a possible source, this mask should probably not be a first choice. The wear of outlfow valve masks may be seen unfavorably by those who know the difference. My personal practice is to wear this mask with a fabric neck gaiter, which I can pull up to cover the valves in public. Second, it is one-size-fits-most. Since mask effectiveness is completely dependent on fit, even a mask with great filters, like this one, may still not be effective for you without modification. Since this mask only has a neck strap and tends to slide down off my nose (even after adjusting the nose clip), I run an additional velcro strap through the ear loops to make a head strap. Wear a baseball cap if you want to hide the strap. Self-adhesive rubber weather strip material (1/2 x 1/4 inch) can be applied as needed inside the shell to improve seal around the nose and upper face area. Even if the metal nose clip comes loose from the shell (it is easily damaged during machine washing), a combination of velcro and weather strip can keep the mask fully functional. IMHO, if you can get a good fit, this mask is better than a commerical industrial valved N95 (which is currently unavailable to the public). Here’s why: First, the commerical products are disposible and are typically unusable after a few hours of work. With this mask shell, filters can last for a week of heavy daily use because they never touch my hands or have direct contact with the work environment. Second, the outflow valves are larger than on a commercial mask, resulting in a mask with much easier exhale and less heat/moisture buildup (suitable for strenous exercise/work). This also makes the filters last longer. The shell should be hand-washed only, after removing valves and filters, to prevent damage, especially to the nose piece. Replacement outflow valves should be ordered separately if you plan to use this mask as your primary protection. The valve pieces are easily misplaced or lost when removed from the shell during filter change and washing. The mask is not functional without these valves. My suggestion is to order 2 extra valves for each mask. Since each Base Camp mask has two outflow valves, if you want to replace both of them (or to have a complete pair of two spare valves), you must order a quantity of 2 items. Although the valve is not difficult to replace, there are no instructions included. Supplier pictures indicate that a single silicone diaphragm must first be mounted on the inner valve section, properly seated over its center post and oriented with its concentric ridges forming a slight outward facing-cone. The filter replacement procedure is also the basis for valve replacement, remembering that the inner valve section must be inserted first through the filter and mask outflow holes. Once in place, the outer valve section must be seated and turned a full 90 degrees clockwise to lock into the inner section. To direct outflow in a specific direction, the inner section slots must be correctly aligned relative to the mask prior to attaching the outer section. For example, if you want valve outflow to be directed downward, the inner valve section slots must be aligned vertically, and then the outer valve tabs seated so that the outflow guides appear to be facing forward. After full 90 degree clockwise rotation to lock, mask outflow will now be directed downward.

Title: MASK and FILTER PERFORMANCE & FYIs
Review: I looked at many of the dual port masks on Amazon; went over the reviews and the number of them. Most import. I looked at the MFG claims, ‘English’, timeliness of shipping, and response to an issue. All of these were excellent, either by review or personal experience. I also spent a great deal of time reviewing replacement filters. I found cheaper replacements, but none seemed to have the same quality. Of course both evaluations are purely subjective and ‘marketing’. I do have >11 years in the field of Environmental, Health & Safety and another 20 years of Federal Service involving Product Assurance, Design ….So. without sophisticated laboratory equipment to evaluate a product, one ‘rolls the dice, and takes a chance’. I chose this manufacturer. After using the product three times now for 2-4 hours continuously I can say that the fit and seal were very good; nose clearance to mask, very good; ease of taking a breath, while holding palms over ‘exhaust’ ports, excellent; ease of breathing out very good. I did find that I had to adjust the back strap 2-3 times to find the best position for ease of head movement. Even when loose the seal remained very good. One mask had a manufacturing problem when the package was opened. This is something that the Seamstress or Quality Assurance Inspection should have caught. I contacted the seller. In approximately 48 hours I had a replacement. This is excellent response and Turn-Around. To ‘cut’ the Mfg some slack, even in the very best “ISO-” Facilities errors do happen, though very rarely. Since I don’t know what their Defect Rates are or Returns are, they get a PASS, and Excellent Customer Service. The only problem IS NOT PRODUCT related. If you place on going to any Medical Office or Facility. DO NOT WEAR it. As soon as I entered the building, while having my temperature scanned, I was instructed to remove it, because the exhaust air is not filtered. I said I was unable to get any seal with a disposal mask (blue type), any kind. The response was they cannot permit the use of any mask that has ports, even if the ports are “PM 2.5” filtered since they are not approved for medical use. So, I asked what about me breathing and exhaulting unfiltered air? They said they wete sorry. I asked if I could wear the Blue Mask under my mask???? No, I’m sorry. In the non-hospital complex, I saw all kinds of “filtering devices” being used, from “Scarf” types [filters ~57% of I/E air] to Hospital approved ‘fitted masks [filters ~87% I/E air]. So far, this type mask appears to be the best mask out there as long as: THE WEARER MUST BE/IS VIRUS/BACTERIA FREE TO USE AN UNFILTERED EXHAUST MASK for the welfare and safety of others. My bottom line – Great product so far. And, I will wear an “unfiltered N95 or N99 mask when going to any medical building of hospital. (Note: In one instance even that was not good enough. I had to throw this type mask fo a “blue mask”. Their reason, (A valid one), they did not know where, how many times used, or ‘cleanliness’ of hands when touching it.This mask and THEIR filters get a 5 & 5.

Title: Doesn’t fit or filter well.
Review: This looked like a good design at first, and it has a few positive aspects like the ear loops that hold the mask on your face while you use two hands to close the Velcro straps around the back of your neck, however overall it doesn’t fit or filter well and it takes too long to adjust the neck strap. I have a short beard (8.5 mm) and the mask lets in more sanding dust than an N95 (Covid) mask ever did, which means the mask doesn’t have an adequate face seal. This mask breathes out easily enough, but in a dusty environment (woodworking sanding dust) the dust accumulates on the mask and all around the edges of the mask where dust bypasses the filter and enters the mask around the edge line. I stopped using mine after a couple weeks and went back to a 3M half-face respirator or the N95 masks I’ve used for 30 years. I don’t recommend this mask to woodworkers or anyone with a beard.

Review: I used this in my wood shop recently and can tell you it’s comfortable and filters out dust and works as advertised. I like the fact the filters can be changed. Very nice carrying case to keep it clean.

Review: I worked at a greenhouse and soil dust is everywhere. I used to have dirt in my nose using a normal mask but after using basecamp mask, i have lesser dirt stuck in my nose. I would say that it filters 97% of the air i breathe in. I would assume that it works better too if it fits my face and nose structure. It fits big on a female head/face but i had made it work for me and i am very happy that i found this mask to help me breathe normally at work. It might feel uncomfortable at first but it is was easy to get used to.
