A quick rundown of this product’s key features:

Too many people assume the timeless principles of true leadership–of helping others achieve their full potential–don’t apply Monday through Friday during work hours or in any circumstance where a paycheck is involved.

In GREATER THAN YOURSELF, Steve Farber proves them wrong: in this powerful and inspiring story, Farber shows that the goal of a genuine leader is to help others–teammates, employees, and colleagues–become more capable, confident, and accomplished than they are themselves. Through the actions of a forward-thinking and extraordinarily successful CEO, Farber reveals the three keys to achieving this: Expand Yourself, Give Yourself, and Replicate Yourself.

This new edition includes a special afterword by UCSD’s Dr Alan Daly and Neville Billimoria featuring the social science behind the concept of Greater Than Yourself.

Filled with actionable principles and innovative ideas, GREATER THAN YOURSELF is perhaps the most powerful message today’s business leaders can learn.

Title: Reads like a really good novel
Review: This is the first business book I’ve read in a LONG time that I can truly say I enjoyed. It read like a novel for it was very well written. It was literally a page turner. Why? Because it was written in the format of a story that was directly related to Steve’s experience with different people who first brought the GTY concept to his attention.I also liked his authenticity throughout the book. He admits right from the start he thought GTY was some hokey-pokey-pie-in-the-sky concept that would never work. But as the “so-called novel” progressed, he began to really catch on. Although he doesn’t talk too much about the mentee he eventually chose as his “GTY project,” he skillfully brings out how and why this is not only noble but very practical, despite his doubts at the beginning.Let me just say that as a result of reading his book, I’ve taken on a GTY mentee. While that might not faze you in the least, it does represent the first time in my entire life that I’ve undertaken a mentee in a deep, meaningful way.I would say this is one of the best business books I’ve read in a long time. It’s not stuffed with fluff. It really brought out my emotions. I found myself laughing, crying and smiling. It made me contemplate the consequences of taking on a GTY project – it’s definitely not for everyone. It takes courage, commitment and strength to develop any kind of mentor/mentee relationship; especially one that constitutes a GTY project. As a former stockbroker, I’d say “It’s a buy.”

Title: A Book with Courage, Creativity and Substance
Review: I bought this book (kindle version) after meeting Steve Farber and watching him speak at a recent conference. I have studied leadership for many years and read everything I could get my hands on.Without question, Greater Than Yourself (GTY) has been the single most important book I have read on the subject. Steve is a fabulous author. His ability to tell an important story through the lens of a business parable is mesmerizing. I was so captivated by GTY that I read the entire book, the first time around, in 2 1/2 hours. For any person interested in the heartfelt side of leadership, I would highly recommend this book.Congratulations Steve, for a job well done!I wrote a blog article on this book, and it can be viewed at the following URL: […]

Title: A “Come From Behind” Win
Review: While GTY is a well-written and very entertaining story, for the most part I found it to be a re-write of half a dozen other books. That is, until I got to the end of the book. What Steve Farber does at the end of GREATER THEN YOURSELF: THE ULTIMATE LESSON IN TRUE LEADERSHIP, really saves the book for me. Here Farber gives the reader “A framework for action” that gives detailed actionable steps to implement this brand of leadership.I do have to disagree with Farber on one critical point. He claims GTY is different from mentoring, but I believe that’s exactly what it is; mentoring done correctly. The basic tenets of GTY are “expand yourself” (the more you know, the more you can give), “give yourself” (be a willing teacher) and “replicate yourself” (teach someone else to be as good or better than you are). That sounds like mentoring to me.There are some great lines in the book. A few that caught my attention were, “changing the world doesn’t require changing everybody in it”, “the greater your resources, the more you can give”, and a great little explanation about the old adage, “knowledge is power”. You’ll just have to read the book to learn the dirty little secret about that famous phrase. This is a quick and easy read and the storyline captures the attention. While it does have a similar message to a lot of other books out there, it is well worth reading.

Title: Extreme Mentoring Model
Review: Greater Than Yourself by Steve Farber is an engaging business fable that redefines leadership and challenges us to “Expand yourself, give yourself, and replicate yourself” through an extreme model of self-improvement and mentoring. Traditional mentoring is valuable and encouraged. However, the model of mentoring advocated by Farber is different. It is a very purposeful identification of someone that you commit to in a manner much deeper than traditional mentoring. You have to understand to the very core of your being that relationship is not a zero sum game. Your heart has to be big enough to care about another’s hopes and dreams at least as much as you care about your own. And you have to be getting better and better, more competent, smarter, more experienced, more connected to others all the time. This model of mentoring links mentoring to legacy. One can “philanthropize your life” by giving of your-self to another – your expertise, your insights, your connections, your commitment. Leaders typically consider themselves mentors of others, and Farber ups the ante when he redefines leadership with heart as, “Real leadership…is an extreme act rooted in love and motivated by a desire to create a better world – whether it’s the world of your company, team, neighborhood, or family.” So, once one has completed the presteps necessary in this model, selecting a mentee means finding someone that you deeply believe in, “…with a combination of potential, desire, work ethic, drive, and heart.” And part of the contract is a commitment for your mentee to commit to pay it forward as well so that the virtuous cycle can continue. This is a fun and easy read.If you enjoy music, mysteries, leadership or self-improvement, pick up this book.

Title: You may really like this style
Review: I read this book rather quickly, and actually liked it, but view it as an okay book. It is a novel that teaches its lesson through a story. It could lacks maybe in being concrete at times, but that’s its nature. I would pass it on to my high school leadership students for sure, and to any adult who wants this type of read.
