Title: Nicely done book on Victorians with lots of floor plans.
Review: I’ve purchased a number of Dover Books over the years now and have found them to be a good buy. I particularly like this one as it has the accompanying floor plans on most of the houses, which is the main reason I enjoy them so much. I bought this used and the cover had changed color a bit with time but the book itself was in great shape and was worth it.

Title: What I actually wanted more than a coloring book.
Review: This book has beautiful houses to just admire. No need to color or touch them in any way.

Title: As Expected
Review: The plates in this book look just like the cover image – a bit washed out. There are floor plans, which I personally find fascinating. I love that its a historical reprint of original sources. Makes you long for a butlers panty and a wing for the servants. So hard to find live in help ever since the blasted industrial revolution! I bought it as a historical guide for paint colors, which it might be good for if accuracy is key, but apparently the Victorian palate is too dull for words – a lot of pinky-beige and rust. But the book is worth the price just for the house prices printed with every image!

Title: Nice collection.
Review: I wish that some of the plans were complete as my interest is to replicate one of the but slightly modernized in layout. All in all not too bad as I’m finding plans with extensive fireplaces. This is a good place to staryt and then go forward in searching for further plans.

Title: good book to have if your into this topic
Review: Good book. If you are familiar with modern Painted Ladies you’ll be surprised by how subdued (dare I say dull or bland) authentic colors are. Yay for modern technology and color choice.

Review: I brought this book as a first step in my interest of American turn of the century homes, as I fined them fascinating compared to what was built in England around the same time. I must say this is a really good beginners guide. It is simply filled with colourful pictures as on the front of the book, with a floor plan of one or both floors. The are no synopsis or technical words no explanations. The are some one line titles like “A cottage for fifteen hundred pounds” (if only). I do find myself going back to this book time and time again, finding things I did not see before. If you are looking for inspiration this books not half bad.

Review: This short book (75 pages) presents, in their original muted colours, floor plans and perspective views of single-family houses designed between 1885 and 1894. These range from quite simple cottages to what can only be called mansions, one with a drawing room measuring 16’ by 32’! Bar for a noticeably short introduction, there is no text whatsoever except a title for each home and its location, e.g. “A cottage at Buffalo, N.Y.”. Thus, the reader does not know if any given house has survived, or even if it was ever actually built.A variety of comments may be made:• many floor plans are imaginative and potentially inspiring with say a circular reception room or an octagonal dining room;• though they all reflect their era with a series of specialized rooms (parlour, library, butler’s pantry, sewing room, etc.), each floor plan is different, with the single exception of those on pages 26 and 45 which are practically identical;• no technical information is provided: was there central heating? _ probably not; was there electrical lighting? _ probably not; some of the cheaper houses do not even have indoor bathrooms!• many homes have three stories but sadly no plan is ever provided for the uppermost floor; in a few cases, there is only a plan for either the first or the second level;• sketched long before the era of 3-D computerized renderings, some perspective drawings do not exactly match the floor plans included … but all do exhale a definite charm. This book is warmly recommended to all interested in architectural history and floor plans.
