Title: Excellent!
Review: I have a bad habit of falling for the allure of a new cookbook and then not using it, but this one is different. Recipes are quick and simple with few ingredients, and the flavor is amazing. I’ve made two so far and both served husband and myself with leftovers for a second dinner. I’m really looking forward to making more from this book, as well as repeating the recipes I’ve tried.

Title: Renewed hope that I will learn to cook
Review: Cookish’s simple recipes with shorter cook times and good flavor have already twice made it possible for me to feel like I successfully made yummy, homemade meals for my family. Nothing is more frustrating when trying to learn how to cook than recipes that take a long time and turn out meh. If I cook any recipe from anywhere, it always takes me two to three times as long to make it because I’m a rookie. So morale in cooking adventures and trying to build cooking habits has long been low. But I’m excited now! I actually want to pick out dinner for tonight!

Title: Nice change of pace
Review: I love the concept of this book – recipes with 6 ingredients that come together quickly. My only compaint is that while these are supposedly made with pantry ingredients, I find that most recipes have one ingredient that is not something I normally have in the house and requires advanced planning. Many of the recipes are also on the spicy side, though the chili can be cut down or eliminated. Overall, this is a great addition to my collection of recipes and I find myself opening it several times a week to come up with an idea for dinner.

Title: Spectacular!
Review: I have a bookcase full of cookbooks from the last 50 years—Craig Claiborne to Ottolenghi —but this is my new favorite. Many of these recipes are fridge to table in 30-40 minutes, including cooking time. The flavors are wonderful, the ingredients fresh, and the presentation beautiful. Fit for company, simple, elegant and delicious. The recipes also invite variation. I added white beans and a bit of apple cider vinegar to the pork with cabbage and peppers; I threw some frozen okra into the salmon with chipotle tomato sauce. What I love the most is that you can put a lovely meal on the table in half the time, without sacrificing freshness or flavor.

Title: Great for interesting flavors and low labor
Review: There are so many things I like about this book, from how it is organized to the results. Christopher Kimball has come up with a full assortment of straightforward recipes, with variations and substitutes, that don’t take a lot of work but are really interesting.I appreciate the care taken to describe the recipes as capturing the flavors of what often are much more complex dishes. Language like “inspired by“ let us know that we’re getting a hint but not the original (a distinction too often missed by less thoughtful recipe writers). Most ingredients can be found in a big box grocery store. Not a single recipe is more than two columns on a single page, and a lot of recipes are even half of a page. Even a novice home cook can tackle many of these recipes on a weeknight. even better, many (if not most) are single pot or pan recipes. If you are a home cook looking for simple dishes that invoke an array of world flavors (Mediterranean, African, Italian, Greek, etc.) with ingredients you can have or generally find, that won’t take a day to make, this is the book for you.

Title: Great for pandemic era cooking!
Review: This book has saved me from pandemic-related cooking burnout. I’m really over meal planning, can’t do a lot of extra grocery trips to get that one item needed for dinner. With a short list of ingredients, there was always a good shot of having enough items on hand to get “cookish” for an unplanned meal. One that didn’t need a lot of energy to make. I love that they build in flexibility and provide several options of ingredients to use. Some people already cook that way, some of us like it spelled out. I think this book is best for people with some cooking experience, as it’s light on specific directions (amount of heat, cooking times), although it does give accurate approximations for how long the whole recipe will take. Everything I’ve tried as been extremely flavorful despite the short ingredient list.

Title: Not so enamored
Review: I bought this after getting the Milk Street Vegetables cookbook, which is one of my great favorites. Although this one was highly rated, I did not find the recipes as enticing as those in Vegetables. If you need to choose between the two, you will love Vegetables for the tasty, relatively simple, and wide ranging recipes. I could live happily without this one.
