Title: Want Android Auto or Carplay in your car? Get this or something similar!
Review: When I first got my 2017 Subaru Forester, the onboard navigation/entertainment seemed really adequate. After all, I got the upgraded Bose speakers and the system supported Bluetooth – what else to ask for? Just got myself a magnetic mount for my Pixel and was a happy camper.However, after renting several cars with wireless Android Auto (I don’t use Apple products), I realized what I’m missing. Not only navigation using a larger screen was way better, but the features were amazing: I could control the whole thing with my voice really well, there were also very convenient controls for music and other apps on the large screen, my messages were displayed in a very readable way.So started my quest in trying to get Android Auto installed on my Forester. There are apparently kits, that would upgrade the built in screen to support it. But those are really expensive (>$400 and up), and one would have to re-wire a lot of onboard electronics, including the speakers, AC controls, the rear camera etc.Just recently I’ve discovered these external screens – and they are almost a perfect implementation for Android Auto. The screen just attaches to your windshield using a suction cup (or your dashboard on a sticky tape). After that you just need to provide power to it using either a lighter port or a USB – and voila, you are all set.The screen has a built in speaker, it’s not super loud but completely sufficient for me. If it’s not for you, there is an AUX out 3.5mm port, that you can use to connect to your car’s AUX IN and hear all the sound on the main speakers.As an added bonus, the device comes with a built in dashcam on the back, which I wanted – and needed, to install a long time ago. The camera just record to a MicroSD card that you provide – pretty standard. Ther is also a rear camera, but my car already has one so I didn’t bother to install it. But might be super handy for a fully loaded truck or an RV.Would I like my car to just come with Android Auto preinstalled? Of course I would. But it is not, and this device is the second best thing to that.

Title: Functions, but don’t move it.
Review: Worked well, some intermittent connection issues but still works as advertised.Was able to install in an older car, have not tested backup camera. The upgrade was a welcome change to an aging sound system.Do not try to move it once you’ve picked a spot for it – tested initially in a different car (this was a gift for someone not terribly tech-savvy) and then tried to install in the correct car and the adhesive was used up. Was able to get installed with the permanent mount, so all is good. Connect with Bluetooth to an existing sound system if you can, that part gets a bit tricky if you’re not technologically inclined.Also – adjusting the suction cup arm to be out of the way is a pain, but there was an angle that worked well enough. Most of these devices seem to have this flaw, so not docking points here.Would love to see one of these packaged with a wireless backup camera.

Title: Edited review after issues with product
Review: I bought this and installed it in my truck. It worked great for 11 months. But yesterday it just stopped working. When I turn the key on, it boots up, the display turns on, then instead of playing the little boot up music, it’ll play the first 3 notes, then it stops, the screen goes blank, and it doesn’t transmit to the radio anymore. All I get on the radio is static, and a blank screen. It worked good while it lasted, but doesn’t last even an entire year. I won’t be buying another one. Guess I’ll just have to update my trucks stereo instead. The rear facing camera was nice, made it easy to hook up to my 5th wheel. But now it’s useless and it’ll be going in the garbage.Edit. After writing this review, skisea reached out to me. I had bought this 11 months ago and it failed. They sent me a new unit and it showed up yesterday. I can’t yet say that this one will last any longer than the original, but product support is good. I didn’t expect to get anything replaced, so I think they went above and beyond with customer support. I upgraded this review from a 1 star to 3 based on that fact.
