Title: Simple yet elegant farming game
Review: I love the gorgeous art, simple rules, and short playtime of this vegetable farming game. Some people feel this game lacks replayability. The tourist track is, admittedly, static; the same vegetables must be served in the same order and in the same numbers in every game. However, I feel there is plenty of replayability because of the 52 Service cards and the five scenario (“Chapter”) cards, which together create over 13,000 different playing combinations! In addition, there are interesting decisions in when to invoke the bonus rule and what sizes of greenhouses to buy. “Simple yet elegant” is how I would describe this game.

Title: Replayability is low
Review: Reykholt is a one to four player worker placement game that has players racing to farm the most goods to reach the farthest on the tourism track. The game last for seven rounds and the furthest player wins the game.Setup for a 4 player game will have players placing the 5 good boxes near the board, a random set of Service cards (A-E), and the round tile markers (7 rounds). Each payer will receive a player card (in a color) with 3 worker discs and manager. The manager is placed on the tourism track. Players will also place Greenhouses beside the board, and shuffle into a deck a set of random Greenhouses.Players turn:Work Time- players will each take a turn placing one of their workers. This will continue for each player until they have placed all three of their workers. When placing a worker, the player must be able to do one of the actions. They must also do all actions on the space if able. The board is separated into four columns and players are only limited to placing a worker on one space with a flag. When a player places a worker on a flag space, they are unable to do any other flag actions in the same column. When a player seeds during this time they will place one good from their supply into a greenhouse and then fill the rest of the greenhouse with goods from the general supply (good boxes). When a player harvests they will take only one good out of one greenhouse, no matter the amount of harvesting actions given. Players must always harvest from multiple greenhouses unless otherwise noted on a space.Service cards are special abilities a player will receive that range from gaining more goods to doing additional harvesting. Some service cards are also one time uses that activate when taken. The uniqueness of the service card is that another player to the left or right are able to share in this ability.Harvest Time- Players are able to Harvest one time from each of their Greenhouses.Tourism Time- Starting with the player furthest ahead on the Tourism track. A player will advance their manager by spending goods matching the location the manager is moving into. The Tourism track begins with only needing one kind of good before increasing this amount by one after each of the 5 goods that have been past. This means it is one good for the first 5 spaces before becoming two goods for the next 5 spaces. Once per Tourism Time a player is able to use a bonus instead of paying for an advancement. A player will obtain the amount of goods listed on the Tourism track before advancing their manager.Homecoming Time- Players will retrieve their workers, the round tile advances, and the first player marker passes to the left. This will continue until the finale round tile is discard (7th tile). The player that is farthest on the tourism track wins the game.Reykholt is a worker placement game which plays in a rather short amount time. This game requires players to carefully plan where and when they will seed and harvest. The service cards bring a nice mechanic of still being able to use an ability of someone as long as they are adjacent to the player. This helps as sometimes players are worried of missing out on special abilities. The game flows quick as players are simply gathering goods and planting them before the Tourism Time. This can be problematic for individuals that do not want to think ahead of how they will be planting their fields. Players really do not need to do this though as advancing is never that impossible. This is especially true with the bonus given in the game as it guarantees the players a free move and goods. The main issue for the game is that the replayability is not very high. Players will quickly get use to what the board has to offer. The 5 sets of service cards (A-E) give some uniqueness to the game, but not much. The game does come with a story mode that helps modify the game further, but it is what the main board has to offer that hurts replayability. This is a lite worker placement game that is rather quick, but it is also fast because it hardly presents something new with each playthrough.Teaching the Game: Make it clear the the players that they can do some of an action when it lists the word “and”. They do have to do the entire action if they are able. Also, look at the wording for some of the locations as sometimes this can cause players to misunderstand what they are able to accomplish. An example of wording is “seed at least two times” which means that they can go beyond two. Identify the areas of the board that allows players to discard greenhouses to advance as this is a nice alternative for players.

Title: Beautiful Game that Overstays its Welcome
Review: I loved this game the first time I played it. It’s very easy to teach and it looks gorgeous on the table. But subsequent plays have played out exactly the same, every time. Since the scoring track never changes from game to game, it’s easy to figure out one tactic and stick with it. I eventually sold my copy, which was hard to do because I was wowed the first time I played. But it got old quickly.

Review: Plus: nice components, easy rules and a fun scoring system.Unfortunately that is about it for this game. It’s just a little too simple, making this game quite boring and none of the variety systems really add much variety, so they don’t help the game much. This game just doesn’t hold up between many incredible games on the market. Go with Agricola instead.
