Whispering Smith starring Audie Murphy – The Complete NBC TV Series! One of the rarest and most sought after of all television westerns, Whispering Smith featured Audie Murphy, America’s most decorated soldier in WWII, as a Denver-based railroad private eye in the Old West. Many of the episodes were based on actual Denver police cases, and Smith has to use all his wits, as well as his skill with a Colt .45 to bring justice to those who would defraud the railroad. His superior was played by Sam Buffington, his partner by Guy Mitchell, and although it aired for only 20 episodes, the show had a great cast of guest stars, including Les Tremayne, Forrest Tucker, Marie Windsor, Alan Mowbray, Minerva Urecal, Alan Hale Jr. and Marjorie Reynolds. Bonus Feature: Medal of Honor: The Audie Murphy Story – The complete story of one of America’s true heroes, Audie Murphy, who received the Medal of Honor for his bravery under fire in WWII, as well as 32 other medals including the Silver Star and the Distinguished Service Award.

Title: What a surprise!
Review: Although I’m a big Audie Murphy fan, this TV series caught me by complete surprise, as I was only aware of his movies. This was an intelligently-written show, and even the less-rewarding episodes are well-done, with Murphy showing both intelligence and bravery in his role. Those who dismiss Murphy as a real-life hero that managed to have a decent film career are missing the point. Murphy was a superb actor who was unfortunately quite pigeon-holed into playing the hero, but there are subtleties in his many performances that show he could hold his own with many of the more-famous stars of the day. And as one who personally know (or knew) many of Murphy’s co-stars, I can state that all of them felt he was an excellent actor who seldom received the recognition he should have. “Whispering Smith” is different from many westerns of the era because the title character is a detective who uses his brains as much as his brawn, and it’s very surprising that series had trouble due to its violence. Murphy only uses his fists or his gun as a last resort, and there are many instances when he doesn’t get to that last resort. The supporting characters are solid, and many of the guest stars are movie favorites (Les Tremayne, Lori Nelson, Audrey Dalton) who add to the fun. My one disappointment is that the series did not go on for another few seasons, because it deserved to be a hit. I’m halfway through the season and not looking forward to finishing it, because there will be nothing more to look forward to. And it’s too good to put it aside to stretch it out a bit. Even those who aren’t Audie Murphy fans should get a lot of pleasure out of this fine, mostly-forgotten, television show.

Title: A gem for western, and Audrey Murphy fans.
Review: Wished it was shot in color, plus remasrered and was also released on blueray with some extras. Oh well, we dont live in a perfect world. As for being shot in color goes one can do nothing about it, but as for the rest goes, hey someone get it done. This series is a gem for people that love not only westerns, or are Murphy fans, but also like good storytelling. This series further illustrate, Murphy could have played more than westerns. That’s another topic. Whispering Smith resonates beyond grave.

Title: Audie Murphy – Denver Detective!
Review: It’s Audie Murphy! What’s not to love??? Many people, including me, were unaware that Audie Murphy starred in a tv series in 1960 for one season. The only thing I wish were different is that it was filmed in black and white. But even so, the stories are interesting since apparently this was based on a real detective and real cases. Audie always did his own stunts and some of them are really amazing. Another interesting fact, is that the motion picture content board apparently had hearings about how violent this series was, in particular the episode “The Grudge”. Audie went to bat for the show and eventually it was allowed to continue. If you love Audie Murphy, you must see this series! (Plus he narrates each episode and it’s great to hear his voice).

Title: Another ‘blast from the past’
Review: Ok, so it’s not ‘Bonanza’ or one of the more memorable Tv series to come out of the US 60’s era, but although the acting and settings are typically 40’s Westerns (sadly no Charles King around) the baddies are bad and the goodies are – well – good! I bought this to complete my sad collection of Guy Mitchell’s work and found it to be very watchable if I put away my 2012 knowledge of modern technology and slick – although sometimes unacceptable – ‘real-life’ dialogue. Not quite ‘what did you do in the war dad?’ rather than ‘how come you were brain dead enough to watch this dad?, The kids will find it hard to believe that this was part of our evening diet, but as another facility to access memory lane, this compilation is great – nay, of it’s genre, superb and well worth the few pounds needed to add it to any decent library of memorable TV series. Re-reading the foregoing I can’t believe I’m saying this, but if you are of my generation you will know exactly what I mean. Worth investing!

Title: Not the Complete Series
Review: Amazon and the package promotes this being the complete series. It is not. They filmed 26 episodes and only 25 are included. Talk about a big mistake! However, this was considered a Holy Grail of TV Westerns for many years so I for one am thankful of the 25. On a scale of one to ten, I would give the picture quality a 9 or 9.5. They are not remastered, but the transfers are for the most part clean. Whispering Smith was a detective on the Denver, Colorado Police Department in the 1870s. This show took case histories from Smith’s adventures. George Romack was Smith’s partner and John Richards was the police chief. The series was filmed in 1959 but never televised until 1961. Rumor has it that the show got pulled after people complained it was too violent. I doubt that. The 26 episodes were already in the can more than a year and a half before they were televised and by that time Murphy was filming a number of action westerns for the big screen. Why would he want to return to television? Amazon’s asking price is a bargain for this series.

Review: Of course there were imperfections in the video and sound quality,(subtitles would have been nice), but it is understandable considering the age of the series and it is mentioned on the discs that state of the art technology was used to produce the best possible results. I nevertheless enjoyed and appreciated the series very much, plus it was a pleasant surprise to recognize other known actors. As far as I’m concerned, this is a “must have gem” for us avid fans and collectors of Audie Murphy’s works. I love it and am really glad I have this rare series of “Whispering Smith”…
